After reading one of the threads the other day on a non-stop fan issue. I checked the internal temp of my 722 and saw that it was averaging 130 degrees. That was a lot so the tech guys at Dish sent me a new 722. Now I am about to swap the two, but I would like to keep the recordings I have on the old receiver and put them on the new hard drive. I have an 80 GB usb HDD that I use for various reasons. Can't I just plug that in, save the files somehow, and move them to the new unit. There has to be a way. Thanks in advance.

Yes, you do exactly that. There's a USB Storage option in the DVR menu. To use the drive with the Dish receiver make sure you have nothing important stored on it because it will reformat the drive.

Dish charges a one-time $40 fee to enable the feature. The number to call is on one of the banners you see while the unit is turned off.

40 bucks !!!! Well, maybe the last episode of The Office isn't that important after all. I wonder if I can talk them into waiving that fee because it is a replacement unit. I'll see what happens, thanks a ton.

I am not sure if you can watch content from one reciever on another. I am pretty sure it has to be loaded back onto the origianal receiver to view it...DISH makes sure you don't sell movies on ebay or hand it out to your friends.

i have not paid the $40 and activated my USB so i am certianly not the authority. maybe one of our wiser members will chime in...

I've had the same issue with a new unit and between the $40 activation and the cost of an external hard drive, I think I will opt to erase the old programs. Buying previously viewed movies or programs would be cheaper in the long run. Let us know if they let you waive the activation fee.

don't know if they will waive the fee, but you can watch directly from the EHD, don't have to copy it back if you don't want to.

maybe they will waive the fee if you explain it's just because you have a replacement unit, and they can turn the feature back off in a day or two.

I just got off a chat with the tech people and they said there was not a fee to transfer. I am going to try it this evening when I get home. I hope that is true. Anyone here know any different? I don't always trust the chat representative, if you know what I'm talking about.

Update: Never mind, as expected the second chat session revealed a 39 dollar charge. I have to call in to see it I can get it waived. I'll report back.

The chat representatives are marginally preferable to asking a brick wall your question. At least the wall doesn't give you an incorrect answer.

I talked to the CSR on the phone, then a supervisor, and then an account specialist. I got the fee waved by the account specialist. He was super nice and didn't hesitate to waive it. The CSR and supervisor would not budge. Now I am having a hard time connecting my 80 GB passport HDD to the receiver. It keeps telling me that an external hard drive is not connected.

Most of the Passport type, USB powered drives will not work. You will need a standard, self-powered drive.
