Which drive do you actually have? Look up the two above (I have one of them in mine) and you will see they are a higher grade desktop drive designed for video and other read/write intensive work as well as designed with quiet as one of its features.

Seagate has what they call ES class drives and Western Digital has their RE and REII drives.

Trust whatever you want - I will re-iterate what was told that the techs said - there is concern over the type of drives people will buy to use for an external drive.

I don't care what you use, you aren't going to call me when all your shows disappear!

AV Optimized drives are ideal.. Now get everyone to agree on what an A/V Optimized drive should do ;)

Well I guess the big thing is no interrupts for sequential transfers ;)

Other than that... yes is the answer.

As I posted months ago, this will not come before 2008 if at all. Notice the "may come later this summer" May is the key word. They know already it isn't coming this year.

Information I originally received came to me from someone in direct contact with Leslie Harper.

And do they say why it won't be coming this year?

I, for one do not intend to leave my external storage connected to my 622 24/7. USB 2.0 is plug and play. I'll connect it when I need to use it and shut it down the rest of the time.

The drives in my PC run 24/7 and have been for the last 3 years, I expect the external USB drives on my 622 to be around for 10 years+ (probably 2 X the 622's lifetime).

Yes, as will most of us here, we're not the ones Dish has to worry about. External drives will not be a secret reward for Sat Guys, although I wish they would let us start "testing" it now.

The average Joe is going to plug one in and forget about it.

Glad to hear your drive has been fine, mine too. BUT, there is a failure rate and you might not get a good drive next time. That's the luck of the draw. Most of the time the drive will work without error but sometimes a drive will quit after a few days - right after you get all your stuff on it. I have seen it happen many times. Had to pay a drive recovery company one time and it was not cheap. Fortunately, it was corporate money, not mine.
