tech chat reply re: external storage

CSR will only know so much so I'm sure we will know on here when this will be up before them. It works this way for most companies CSR's only have so much access and are told only so much. So for now will half to wait and see like everyone else.

How exactly with an external drive work on a 211?? A 211 isn't a DVR so it won't write to the external will it?? Maybe it's just an external DVR?? Maybe it will play all the pirated newgroup rips I've got?? Maybe it'll play 622 content?? Odd . . .

It will make the 211 act as if it is a DVR like the 622 (only the hard drive will be outside the unit instead of inside).

Will be 211 just a player or full functioning DVR ?

That's a good question. They have shown it as a player (at TeamSummit), and they have talked about it as a full DVR, but I don't think we have seen it function in this manner yet. Someone correct me if I'm not remembering something. To me it makes sense to have it as a player (so people can carry the drives around to different boxes), but why bother making it a fully functional DVR. If people want that make them get a 622.

I doubt they were showing people the software versions that their boxes were running at TeamSummit (I wasn't there, I rely on what Scott reported).

I have a 211 and a 350 GB Seagate with NTFS at home . . . I have another IDE to USB adapter and have drives with Fat32 . . . I'll see what's up.

(Doubt fat32 would be used since you would easily hit the file size limit on a single HD recording, maybe ntfs or ext2??)

DId you check System Info screen ? - What SW version that 211 used ?

The 211 would be a very basic DVR. With one tuner, I think you either watch what's being recorded or use the antenna / sat whichever isn't in use.

In other words; if you're recording a stream from OTA HD you can watch that recording or you can watch something on sat feed. If you're recording a sat feed you can watch what's recording or something OTA.

However, here I'm assuming that the 211 is capable of actually working with multiple streams this way. I could be mistaken here.

211:
Two Streams (simultaneous rec/play or delayed viewing) of hi-def may push the capability of USB2.

Yea, I know, by the book (480Mbps) it can do it, but actual speeds vary greatly. The pocket dish transfer speeds are really not that impressive (though the PD probably has a pretty slow 4200 rpm HDD).

I still have the 3.45 software (I think, that's what system info shows), I know how to force and update on the 311 but not the 211 . . .

Two OTA streams only need less than one tenth of the that 480mbps bandwidth so I don't think two mpeg4 streams are going to be that much of a burden.

Of more concern in my experience is the ability of the spindle to easily handle multiple streams simultaneously.

Cheers,

And this brings us back to what I was saying in one of these hard drive threads - the tech guys said there was concern that people would use any old cheap drive for their external drive and there would be problems consequently due to people not using server class drives.

It shouldn't be a problem to write one routine to gather data about particular disk - measure cache size, rotation speed and bring a verdict to user - good or bad disk he try to use.

I'm not sure what a "server class" drive is. Except perhaps a 10,000 RPM SCSI.

This is a list of compatible HDDs being called by the 622 firmware (probably partial):
6L250S0 Maxtor
6L320S0 Maxtor
7Y250M0 Maxtor
7Y250P0 Maxtor
ST3320832SCE Seagate
WD3200JS-57PDB0 WD
WD3200KS-57PDB0 WD

I looked up the first Western Digital drive. Just seems like a standard consumer drive.

Anyone having this issue? - 622: Erasing Program Guide Memory
