According to news reports, the first two HD DVD titles in Japan will be "Resident Evil" and a Japanese film, "Moonlight Jellyfish". The funny thing about it is that one of these first HD DVD titles "Resident Evil" is actually by Sony Pictures!!! :D

By the end of April, Toshiba hopes to have two more titles on sale in Japan: Finding Neverland and Shinobi.

Yep, what a web:

Resident Evil by Screen Gems, which is part of Columbia Pictures Industries, which is part of Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Group, which is part of Sony Pictures Entertainment, which is owned by Sony.

There are currently two Resident Evil films, with two others in development, written by Paul W. S. Anderson. Though acclaimed horror film director George A. Romero was hired to write and direct the films, he was removed from the project in favor of Anderson. As Romero's script was a close, but not full, adaptation of the game, Capcom believed that fans would feel that the movie had been altered too much from the game, and that newcomers would dislike the premise film.

Though the movies were mostly panned by critics, reaction from fans was mixed. Some praised the movie for bringing the series to a mainstream audience, while others criticized the fact that it was not a basic adaptation of the Resident Evil games. Many fans also noticed that the movies contain many plot elements that directly contradict those from the games, though the general consensus is that the games and the films take place in separate "universes".

Despite the criticism, the films have been financially successful enough to encourage the approval of a tetralogy. Released films and films to be released are as follows:

* Resident Evil (2002)
* Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004)
* Resident Evil: Extinction (TBA)
* Untitled fourth film (TBA)

Resident Evil, (a.k.a. Resident Evil 1, Resident Evil: Ground Zero, and Resident Evil: Genesis) is based upon the Resident Evil survival horror series. The movie is an American movie shot mostly in Germany and it was followed by one sequel, with more to come.

Ive seen it repeatedly stated at AVS that Blu ray could use any codec it wants. IMO that would just make the video even better and further its storage advantage.

Sure, it could. But what does it have to do with the topic of this thread? :confused:

Seems obvious to me.

Sony's giving in already. The end is near. Go HD DVD!!:)

It means releasing sony movies on HD DVD format is not "giving up" if Blu ray can use VC-1. That conversion will easily be slapped on a Blu ray disk as well. Sony is merely maximizing profits IMO.

Although "Resident Evil" is from Sony Pictures, Toshiba owns distribution rights to it in Japan. Toshiba probably didn't even have to ask Sony's permission. The fact that a movie from Sony Pictures became the first HD DVD title ever is ironic and looks like a slap in Sony's face. teamerickson's comment about Sony giving in already, was meant as a sarcasm! :)
