Trying to upgrade

I own my Dish equipment a DVR510 and a 301 but would like to upgrade to hi-def.
I called a local retailer and he told me I would have to call the 800 number to upgrade because I was not his customer from the start. If I wanted to buy the equipment to upgrade he could do this.
Anyone else have this problem.
Anything that I can do about this.
