TV Resolutions?

Most HD is 1440x1080 packaged in a 1920x1080 channel. It's like what an upconverting DVD player does- 720x480 to 1920x1080. However, Dish with mpeg4 can transmit any resolution it wants and that is usually 1440x1080. It's how they cram more HD channels in. The STB can convert it to 1920x1080.

All of the new stuff I have been working on has been full resolution hd. The days of 1440 x 1080 studio cams are lonnnnnnnngggggg gonnnnnee! Everything is full Rez hd now coming from the channels. Dish is the one of a very few providers whom doesn't pass the full resolution on to the costumer. There will never be a 1440 X 1080 tv made for that specific Rez. Most will up or downconvert.

If anything, 2k and 4k will be the next big thing as providers are gearing up for ultra hd in the coming years.

Isn't HD 2K? I'm already watching 4K at the local cinema. Sure would like it at home with its higher color depth also.

Yes technically,
For example, 2K reference resolution is 2048×1536 pixels, whereas 4K reference resolution is 4096×3072 pixels both beyond 1080 standards.

Really? I had no idea! Where can I read up on this?

Do they distort the image when they re-encode it at 1440 wide so that when it stretches back to 16:9 the image looks right? Or are they doing some sort of zoom/crop thing?

You can start w/ the wiki I posted. It also has references at the bottom that will lead you to more detail.
