Mediacom’s local customers can now get high-speed Internet along with their cable TV service.

Last week, the McDowell County Commissioners talked about the ongoing negotiations with Mediacom over its franchise with McDowell. The cable TV company has 1,300 customers in Nebo, Sugar Hill and Glenwood, along with portions of Dysartsville and Lake James.

A cable company’s franchise with a local government typically lasts for about nine to 10 years. Mediacom’s is set to expire next year. The commissioners previously said they wanted to see high-speed Internet extended quickly into Nebo and eastern McDowell.

Maggie Blythe, Mediacom’s senior manager in government relations, said Thursday that has already taken place. Her company launched high-speed Internet services in the local service area in January. It is now available to any household or business that is already a Mediacom customer or located in the coverage area.

"If you can get cable from us, you can get high-speed Internet," she said.

Mediacom’s service also contains a free package of security tools such as spam, pop-up and spyware blockers, parental controls, anti-virus and firewall protectors. Mediacom’s customers don’t need an additional phone line and there’s no waiting for the connection to go through. It doesn’t interfere with the cable TV viewing, according to Blythe.

As part of the franchise negotiations, county officials said they would like for schools and county-owned buildings to get the service at a reduced rate.

Blythe said her company would provide free high-speed connections to the schools if it is being used by students for educational purposes. Mediacom will not provide free connections for use by the faculty and administration, she added.

Blythe said people can find out more about high-speed Internet by going to the Mediacom office at 71 Nebo School Road. That’s the old post office in Nebo. They can also call a 24-hour customer service line at 1 (800) 946-5388.
