Uncovered- the Model 625 DVR Rip off

And if you order a PPV from a regular Dish network PPV Channel and record it on your DVR it stays there until you delete it (or until you are hit with another Dish Network software bug)

On the VOD PPV Movies they are only stored on your drive for 3 days after you order it after that they are automatically deleted.

I'm sorry but that is just ridiculous. Paying more just so that you don't have to plan ahead is silly. I know that, on my 522, I just find the movie I want, purchase it, setup a timer, and watch it whenever it shows up in my DVR Events. If you can't even keep it as long as you want, regardless of price, that's even more ridiculous. Surely, there will be a way to save it for more than three days.

Many valid points. (LOL Cascade RE:pPE)

Netflix is an option, but you have to wait for yuor movie to be returned before they will send you the next one.

Blockbuster: You STILL have to drive to and from twice per movie rental.

MPAA: Nothing was ever said when the WWF PPV's came on and you had a living room full of testosterone elevated viewers waiting to see chair slammin', table crashin' cage matched wrestlers act like they are beating the snot out of each other.

If you have AEP, you only have 1 $4.95 DVR fee, so the 625 wouldn't really impact my bill if I swapped out the current 522. Which I would NEVER do anyhow.

Sure its a sneaky way for E* to make a little more money. But we all know convenince comes with a price.

Even though I seem to advocate this VOD charge, I can see the logistics of it compared to renting a movie from a video store.

I am one that has NEVER ordered a PPV movie since subbing to E*. My 921 isn't even hooked to the phone line. My 522 is, but only because it tells me so.

With E* AEP (Almost Everything Package) I get more movies than I can ever hope to watch. I watch mostly HDNET or other HD channels. I use the 522 as a redundant backup in case one timer on one unit doesn't fire for other SD channel movies.

Personally I will wait for the next generation of mpeg-4 enabled receivers before I drop another $1000 an a box.

No 625 for me.

*edit* While writing this, my bedroom TV just blew up. SIGH It's always something...

What if DIsh offered Starz on Demand like they offer for FREE on Direct TV when you sub to Starz.

Would it be worth it then?

Anyone know they plan to add this later, Direct has it on there Tivos already.

PS
$4.95 for a PPV is a rip off no matter how you get the movie.

Gas is up to $2.19-2.25 now. Perhaps if everyone ends up with a DVR someday then the service would become more of a PPV service where you pick what shows or movies you want to watch and just pay for everything seperately.

How did it "blow up?"
It made a loud *SNAP* sound and the picture went dark. There was a metronome click, silence, click, silence, click coming from the speaker. Pushing the power button had no effect, unplugging it had no effect.

There was a definite odor of toasted electronics in the air.

I'd say that it may be the primary power circuit or possibly the HV transformer. Who knows... I didn't get to see the end of Stargate Atlantis. :(

I'm thinking about getting a flat panel and just mounting it on the ceiling above my bed. Dunno yet. Depends on what it will cost to get the 27" fixed.

I thought Blockbuster had the same program as Netflix now. Where they will mail you the DVDs.

I agree with you guys the $19. lease is way over what others are charging for a DVR and the extra dollar for On Demand is uncalled for. Again this On Demand is not like the cable ON DEMAND. The cable On DEMAND is actually downloaded from a server. The server has various selections of programs/series and it is updated. The cable companies do not charge you extra for using their server.

Just a thought here, if you've got DVR how often would you use VOD? Why not just record the shows/movies you like and watch them whenever you want? It seems like that's the whole point of DVR?

Precisely.

I think E* is counting on the fact that the average customer still does NOT understand what a DVR can actually do.

They do, it's at their site, Blockbuster.com. I use it all the time. I get an average of 3 or 4 movies a week or 15 a month for $14.99 a month. That's around a buck a movie. Kind of makes the 625 look like a major rip off doesn't it?

I also get 2 free movie coupons I can use in the store each month. Jeez, that's probably less than .85 a movie then!

Well said :)
Same here.

I wouldn't let the MPAA read that, they'd be all over you in a second.

I can see their new strategy, PPE (Pay-Per-Eye) where you're charged a fee for each eye that watches the movie/event.
We'll all have tracking chips implanted into each cornea and a sensor that sits atop the TV screen that monitors each eyeball and charges on a pro-rata basis depending on how much you blink and look down to see where you spilled your milkduds.

The tracking chips will be funded at first by the MPAA and in time will be worked into the viewers monthly statement which will also be subject to a PPE fee unless you sign up for credit card autopay.
If your bill isn't paid on time the satellite company have a clause written into their contract (Which is also PPE) Stating that at any time they are entitled to suspend service to one or both eyes until any outstanding balances are paid.
There will be a $49.99 eye reconnection fee (Per eye).

You forgot one thing. The contract will prohibit you from suing them. You will have to use an arbritrator and will be responsible for paying half the arbitration fee. In addition, since you will not know which arbitrator favors the customer but they know who favors the business, you are likely screwed. Oh! They can sue you if you don't pay and your contract preauthorizes them to bill your credit card as well as auto deduct from any bank account you have just to be sure.

I have Comcast's On-Demand service right now... It's pretty neat. For each movie package you get a list of **free** movies to watch and selected **free** orginal shows. Cinemax has a whole "Max after Dark" section for those into tacky PG-Porn.

They also have an On-Demand channel with random shows from various channels. For example, right now I can watch one of two Chappelle Show Episodes, one Distraction, and a South Park eppy in the Comedy Central section.

They also offer pay-per-view movies for $3.99ea.

DVR Fee: $9.99

Disclaimer: DVR software sucks, can record 2 shows at once, but you can't record two and watch an On Demand show, it'll reboot. Don't watch a show until it's completely recorded, or when it stops recording it'll flash you back to live. Oh, and if you start to watch a show while it's recording, after you select it you have to **rewind** the show back to the beginning and hope you finish it before the recording stops. Oh, No skip 30 second button. Oh, No 15 second Back button. And you only get 30 hours of storage time.

This will soon be a moot point when tivo and netflix finish negotiating

There are Rumors that Tivo and NetFlix are striking a deal that will allow your Tivo boxes to go over your home network and High Speed Connection to get unlimited movies from netflix.

That is, If you have both a Tivo Account and a Netflix account....

This is just a rumor that I have heard from pvrblog.... Don't know any substantiated evidence that this is actually the truth.

However, They did increase the capabilities of the tivo software with Version 7.1... Added Tivo To Go (Allows you downloads of your recordings) so this may be a sign of things to come as a replacement for the E* DVR's... For those of you who watch a lot of movies.

Just a tidbit that I thought might be relevant for this thread.....

Who is going to want to pay another $19 in order to rent more PPV's and pay extra for that? Dish Network should not charge extra for that. If anything Dish Network should be glad if you want to take that particular receiver in order to generate more revenue.
