Uplink Activity for Wed. Dec 14th 2005

Indication is that ESPN2 HD and the New VOOM 5 will very likely be launched in Mpeg4. If goaliebob examines the NIT for these channels he likely will find they are of the same type as the Mpeg4 test channels and not the same type as the Mpeg2 HD Channels. I will keep checking from time to time to see if there is any change in this.

Of course, this is the season for snow and they may be playing games to see what works. :)

Dish is emailing customers and tellng them that existing equipment will be able to receive the new channels.
Dear Customer
Thank you for expressing your concerns and interest in DISH Network. Customer input is an important tool in our efforts to continuously improve the quality of the DISH Network service.
Your 942 receiver should be fully capable of recording any of the new channels once they are launched. There is a January 9th Charlie Chat which should be focused on HD topics. Please let us know if you have any more questions.
At DISH Network we appreciate the time customers take to email their audio/video quality concerns. Thank you for your patience and for being a valued customer.

I wish everyone at Dish would get on the same page. For every 5 Dish employees I have talked to this week 1 out of 5 says the channels will be in MPEG4 which all the rest say MPEG2.

This is very confusing to all. (Myself included)

I still can't figure out why they are putting ESPN2-HD on 61.5 and 129. I really don't want to add another dish right now until all the dust settles.:(

What in the world is the sense of launching these channels in MPEG4 ? Who actually is going to be able to see them at the start ? I mean how many people are actually going to have MPEG4 receivers in January or even in the next few months ? Even if they try to upgrade people it will take months and months to get everyone upgraded. Launching these channels in MPEG4 is plain dumb.

That's exactly the point that most of us are trying to make. The problem is that there is a lot of contradiction at E* and like Scott said, they are not on the same page. Charlie said that they will be in MPEG4 and JohnH is seeing some indication that these channels might be in MPEG4.

We all know it doesn't make sense but this is E*, it's not supossed to make sense.;)

I just don't see anyway these 5 extra Voom and ESPN 2 will be in mpeg4, that makes no sense whatsoever, as a matter of fact it is stupid as others have said
I don't have any worry this will happen, I fully expect to see the 5 Voom, ESPN HD and my national NY HD locals in mpeg2 in Jan.

on the other hand Dish releasing LIL HD in mpeg4 and requiring a updated 942 or other mpeg4 receiver makes perfect sense, much like what Directv is doing

So they were testing them in MPEG2 and now could be testing them in MPEG4, but releasing them in one or the other in January either in full hd or hd-lite.

I'm so confused. I guess that is the downside of following JohnH & goalie uplink threads.

What John is pointing out is the service "type" listed in the NIT. For example:

New voom + espn2hd:
Service: 9473 (TRESR) user defined (0xa6)
Service: 9425 (ES2HD) user defined (0xa6)

Test channel:
Service: 9873 (PMP44) user defined (0xa6)

Old voom, or any other HD channel:
Service: 9472 (GLLRY) user defined (0x91)
Service: 9476 (RUSH) user defined (0x91)

So yes, it is kind of interesting for them not to use 0x91 for the new channels. However, just because they are using 0xa6 does not mean it will be mpeg4. Does anyone have a copy of the NIT for the TP espn2hd is on 129? I'd like to see what the service type was a few weeks ago.

Maybe the change is because they are using turbo coded 8psk (the new one they were talking about) But I dont want to go down that road again :D

Lol nooooooo dont open that can of worms! Besides, they have channels with different service types on the same TP. 8PSK is the TP modulation, not a channel :)

this is what im seeing...

Channel 9475
On Table_ID: 0x46 (another mux)

my question is why is there two transport stream id's with two frequeancys.... One mpg 2 and the other mpg 4? Simlcast? Ideas?

Bob, since others only point to much reading on the subject I will answer your question. The second frequency is preceded by Linkage Descriptor: and the descriptor listing is terminated by Linkage Type: Electronic Programme Guide (EPG) service. The second frequency is the location of the EPG which contains this channel.

Weren't you asked earlier to be more constructive in your criticism towad others? Bob is the one that usually starts these uplink threads on satguys these days. Instead of just correcting him and insulting him at the same time, why don't you start some too?

It's always easier to criticize than get the original point across. If I were to scrutinize what you say on here, I can point out many of your misspelled posts, but I won't. :D

Thanks John H.. I'm trying to scratch my head to see what you all are seeing.. the difference between mpg4 and 2 channels... Ts reader just isn't showing me what I want to see :) maybe the lack of 8psk tunage has something to do with it ;D If its something that you want to talk about off line feel free to pm me..
