U.S. Digital Television, the company that is rolling out a low-cost, wireless alternative to cable, announced Thursday at the Consumer Electronics Show that Norfolk, Va., would be the company’s fifth market.

Beginning this spring, USDTV will offer Norfolk subscribers 30 all-digital channels for $19.95 a month.

USDTV’s service is delivered to subscribing homes “over the air” using the digital signals of local broadcast TV stations. In Norfolk, the nation's the 41st largest TV market, the USDTV service will be delivered through digital TV facilities owned by LIN TV, which owns and operates two stations in the market, WAVY-TV, the NBC affiliate and WVBT-TV, the Fox affiliate. LIN is also one of several broadcasters, including Fox Television Stations, Hearst-Argyle Television, McGraw-Hill Broadcasting, Morgan Murphy Stations and Telcom DTV, that last November invested a combined $25.75 million in USDTV.

In addition to all the local broadcast stations, USDTV’s “family friendly” lineup includes leading cable networks such as ESPN, Discovery, Disney, HGTV and Fox News Channel. The Starz premium movie channel is offered at an additional $6.95 a month. The USDTV receiver kit retails for $24.95.

“We are pleased to bring the residents of the Norfolk/Hampton Roads area a low-cost alternative to the rising cost of cable TV services,” said Steve Lindsley, CEO for USDTV in announcing USDTV's expansion. “Our channel lineup is designed for value-oriented families who are tired of paying for channels they never watch and don’t want coming into their home.”

Launched in March 2004, USDTV’s service is currently offered in Dallas/Fort Worth, Salt Lake City, Albuquerque, N.M., and Las Vegas.

From the people who proudly bring you restricted bandwidth on your local DTV station. Hello, HDTV lite.

no, they don't offer HD for those cable channels. The receiver picks up the local channels in the areas and I believe can output what the locals offer in HD
