Used equipment or leased?

Hi All,

I have been considering taking up VOOM based on their latest offer of a 3 room install for a dollar.

I also see that VOOM Set Top Boxes can be purchased very cheaply on eBay and elsewhere.

Is there any advantage to buying the boxes versus leasing them? Will this save me any money on additional receiver fees or such? Any disadvantages?

If I did pick up used equipment could I just install it myself and then call VOOM to have service activated?

Thanks,

Mike I.

Yah, Voom has a policy not to activate used boxes. So you can buy them off Ebay but they are paperweight.

Just don't do it.

While there is a remote chance the box will function as an OTA receiver, Voom will not turn it back on for you to get the satellite signal.

Thanks all. That info saved me some $$$.

Given that VOOM needs to control costs, it seems pretty foolish of them not to reactivate all those boxes out there from ex-subscribers. Still, no point arguing since they are practically giving the hardware away.

After I cancelled Voom the OTA quit working. So once the box is deactivated it is useless.

Not if you do it correctly. The OTA can continue to function.
