I apologize in advance if this had been covered, but I can't seem to get an answer from the CSR's after calling multiple times.

I have a log cabin in the mountains of WV. I beleive that there are no "local channels" broadcast.

I don't go there very often and usually don't stay for more than 3 days (it's a work thing in these times!).

I'm trying to find an alternative to calling for a "Vacation" install. Can't I just buy an antenna, use the online guides for direction, tilt, etc. and bring my home HD box along when I do visit the house?

If anyone has experience on this, please advise. Will a contracted installer do this "off the clock"? Can I buy an antenna from an installer?

Again, I apologize if there was a previous thread, I just couldn't find answers to fit my questions.

Thanks

Yes you can install a dish at your vacation home and bring a receiver with you when you go for the few days. The only catch to this is no one at your primary residence can legally watch TV at the same time while you are watching it at your cabin. You can find the Slimline dish just about anywhere now days for sale. eBay and our sponsors are both great suggestions.

The install is pretty straight forward. You can use the signal meter on the reciver to tune in and lock signal. Keep in mind there is a short delay from the dish to the receiver. Just make small adjustments. Tune the 101 first then the tilt on the 119 then go back to the 101 and make any fine tuning adjustments. If you are lucky, you might be able to find an installer in the area to do the install on the side for some cash but, I would attempt the install yourself first.

Nutflush,

Thanks for info! If I'm watching in WV no one will be watching at home.

One last question, do local installers ususally advertise as satellite specialists? Around here in MD, I only seem to be able to contact them via the D-TV 1-800 number or via on-line inquiry.

Thanks again!

I am not from MD but, I would first start in the yellow pages under satellite and see what is listed. Perhaps someone from MD might be better able to answer your question.

rtrostiii,

I'm on the eastern shore of MD but I get around and may know someone near you.
What is your town and zip?

Joe

Joe,

I live in Frederick MD 21703, but cabin is in Slatyfork WV about 6 miles from the Showshoe Ski resort.

Thanks

I've been doing this for several years. I too spend 2-3 days at a time.

I have a single LNB dish installed on the vacation home. My place is about 150 miles from home.

Very simple installation. I take an older SD box from the house that I use in my workshop up in the spring and keep it there until winter. I then just hook it back up in the workshop in the fall. I don't ever have it hooked up to a phone line because I don't have a land line.

I've changed no settings on the box. When I installed it originally, I used the set up to find the tilt and azimuth then cancelled the setup once I had the numbers and fine tuned it from there.

I get my "home" locals up there. I think I might be just on the edge of my local spot beam.
It's nice because the closest local OTA market is about 60 miles away.

Never had an issue.
