I have a second home where a spend weekends, vacation and holidays, fixing it up for retirement home in a few years. Can I legally have a receiver there full time and watch the same programing as my main house under the same account? I understand some programing won't be available because of satellite spot beam. I don't like the idea of moving a receiver back and forth everytime I go there.

oh boy here we go....

no you can not leave a box at the 2nd house and have it on the same account. That is account stacking

Now if you take it back and forth, that in most folks mind is OK. We have been doing it for 10 years.

Now the reason I say "here we go again" is because usually these threads turn into a "morals" issue where folks like me and others say its fine to haul it between houses but some people will post "you're breaking the terms blah blah blah" and usually it turns into a pissing match

I've gotta say, this doesn't make much sense to me. What's the difference between lugging a receiver back and forth and having two receivers to begin with? PLEASE NOTE: The usage I envision is that if the subscriber is at home 2 the box at home 1 is not in use and vice versa. If both are being used at the same time, then I conceed there is a significant problem.

If lugging a box back and forth is fine, then having two boxes shouldn't be bad. In fact, Dish even gets an extra monthly receiver fee that way. Please feel free to convince me that my view is wrong on this. And no, I am not trying to start a fight over whether either practice violates ToS or not.

Lugging a box back and forth isn't fine; it's just a way around the rules that most people have less problems with. Same principle as speeding in a school zone. You can do it, but that doesn't make it right. But you CAN do it.

*shrug*

Because E* doesn't usually track down and disconnect people who do it, a lot of people take lack of action as consent to it being acceptable. Then there's others who point to a seven year old Charlie Chat where Chuck said he does it himself (if he does it I must be able to do it too!!!) That said, it is stated as being against terms of service.

Hmm... that sums up the usual arguments rather nicely doesn't it?

Honestly there isn't. But there is one situation where it does matter is dish audit team..if they call you and you cant give them the numbers off all the boxes you're screwed.

Just say hold on, I have to run upstairs to the bedroom, and logon to your 2nd receiver via your Slingbox.:up

And cue the former hall monitor…

wish i would have thought of the slingbox idea!!!

i ended up setting up two accounts. then switch between them as i go from place to place.

keep under 4 receivers and the nazis won't be tempted to bother you.

Audit teams

I had a friend who when the audit team called, his wife or child answered the phone and told them Dad wasn't there and they would need to call back. He would get the box back from the cabin in the next week and call them back with the numbers. I think he did this a couple of times.

This is an interesting thread. I have a situation however that may be unique and I'm wondering the best way to handle it. First, I'm a Dish subscriber here in Texas with a 622. I have a hunting camp in upstate NY where we keep a trailer I stay at for a couple weeks (sometimes longer) during the season in Nov.

We have an antenna on the trailer and run the tv off our generator but really, we are too remote to get more than one or two stations (on good days). Of course, there are no phone lines, water or electricity let alone cable service - and there never will be where we are.. Bringing a dish and receiver up there and back is out of the question because I fly whenever I go up there. So, I was thinking of just getting a big, deep fringe antenna and putting it up as high as I can and hope I can get maybe one or two more channels until this thread got me thinking about Dish. Is there an option for me with Dish under these circumstances? Even we crusty hunters get tired of watching porn dvds day after day!

What kind of numbers do they ask for? Do they ask for more than the numbers that are available on the Equipment section of DishNetwork.com? If that is all they require... then logon to dishnetwork.com... problem solved.

As Iceberg et al said, it is a fine line between what is contractually precisely legal, and what is wrong. I myself have been schlepping receivers to my cabin for at least 9-10 years. I don't think it is any of Dish's business if I put the receiver in my family room or living room at my home residence, so what's the difference if it is in my second living room 80 miles away? I'm still the only one using it. The same argument for RV owners. If the audit team calls tell them them you are remodeling the room and everything is in boxes. Or, just write the numbers down and put it with your documentation ahead of time!

I suggest you install identical antenna setups at both locations. I have a DPP44 at home, and a DP34 at the cabin. I'm wasting all kinds of time doing the check switch when I get there and then when I get home. Anyone got a DPP44 for sale cheap?

Problem not solved. It's not even close to that simple.

There is a “Location ID” that changes every 10 minutes. Check it out in the system info. On my 311 it's on page three. It’s not really a location tracker, it’s just a logarithm based on your boxes numbers but they know what it’s supposed to be and if you don’t your box gets shut off.

Come on, they've been doing this a long time and know just about all the tricks. They use amplified headsets to hear if you’re trying to have your wife call a neighbor on her cell phone to get the numbers or typing on yahoo messenger. If you're not standing in front of your TV it's going to be hard to fake this.

Another thought about moving a receiver each trip…

It’s remotely possible that DISH might clamp down on someone who moves a receiver and is not at home to deal with auditor questions. What the audit team might do is disable all but the primary receiver until they can speak with the accountholder.

My advice is for anyone who does move a receiver is to take the primary one. That way, service would still be available on the receiver you have with you.

Seriously, this isn't allowed? I've got one receiver at our mountain place in PA and another on the boat in MD that travels to VA, FL and even out of the country (no receivers at home due to LOS issues). I've told reps & tech support over and over again what I have and where it is. Many times on the boat I'll require a "hit" to get it going in a different area. The only thing I've heard is that they don't allow this with leased equipment.

However, this is E*, it's not like the reps were probably informed of their own policies!

I have a friend who has 3 receivers. 2 in Texas and one in Mexico. He pays for all 3 year round. He is in Texas 6 months and Mexico 6 months. So there is not duplicate use of the system. In fact, he is paying for more than he uses each month.
Until he put up the dishes( 119 and 110 ) in Mexico and put a receiver down there, he would put his service on vacation hold and pay $5 a month for 6 months. For the last 5 years Dish gets over $160 a month( everything package) year round. If they tell him not to do it anymore, they would lose around $930 per year ($4,600 over the last 5 years). What business model would you persue if you were Dish? Exactly the one Dish has followed. They have not bugged him.
