I have a Vip 211k for my RV; and it came with a 20.1 (IR) remote. It would seem that I can also use a 21.x UHF remote. I do have several 40.0 UHF 2G remotes from my older receivers (either 722 or Hopper2). I did a google search and got conflicting results as to whether the 40 remote would work.

I did a quick try in my office, with none of the coax cables connected, and it doesn't seem to pair. But I'd like some confirmation that 1) a 40 will (or won't) work with a 211K, and 2) a 21.x UHF will work even though there isn't a separate remote antenna connection like other dish receivers that use RF remotes.

The 21.x is UHF, right? I would like to place the receiver in a cabinet and not on top of it.

Yep. Don't forget about the little IR/UHF switch in the battery compartment and I think you have to have the tab in TV 1 position, iirc.

211's don't have the antenna to pick up UHF.
You need to buy an IR to UHF kit

I found a guy who has some used 21 remotes. I'm picking one up tomorrow and will give it a try; w/out the adapter. From what I see the adapters went out of production a long time ago.

A Wally may be the best route to go in the long run.

You won't regret an upgrade to a Wally.

I thought the IR to UHF adapter went out of production over 20 years ago. They were terrible anyway, they'd pick up interference and block even the IR remote from working.

Tried 5 21.x remotes. All 5 worked in IR mode, but not in UHF. Perhaps I can sell the remotes individually and make enough to purchase a Wally! I have a thought about mounting the 211 vertically on the bulkhead above the TV. If the IR still works at that position, I get it off the cabinet; at least. Not as clean as inside the cabinet, but better than where it is now. Since this is for a 1 weekend a month RV, I could live with that.

Ps. MIL is still recovering, but prognosis is good.

Who do we contact to verify a used receiver can be activated? I used to message directly to the DIRT folks, but they have all retired; unless I missed something.
I could probably try to add a recover via my dish, but that seems a little convoluted.
Suggestions?
Yes, call Dish
