Hello,

I purchased a Vip 722 receiver from DishStore.net which should arrive Friday. I have some questions about what to expect:

I currently have a 501 and a 508. I am replacing the 501 with the 722 and will be keeping the 508.

Before the 501 I had a Vip 622 (leased for 18 months and returned to Dish). However, I still have a DishPro Plus LNB for 110/119 and a separate Dish aimed at 129. So when the Vip 722 arrives I should just be able to unplug the old receiver and plug in the new 722.

First Question: Will I be able to simply call in and activate the 722? Or will they insist on a service call and a technician to verify it is installed correctly?

Second Question: If I get AEP (Americas Everything Package and GoldHD) will my monthly bill be $97.98 + $10.00 + $5.00 (additional receiver fee) or will there be other fees too? I use a Tivo and an OTA antenna for locals, so I wont be adding that. My 501 and 508 are currently exempt from the DVR fee (they are grandfathered). And does AEP exempt me from a DVR fee on the 722?

you should be able to call and activate the receiver with no service call. i bought my 211K and activated it no problems. The 722 is a dual tuner receiver and you will be charged for the second tuner unless you hook it up to a phone line or eathernet. The everything pack does not include the DVR fee. You won't need the TIVO just hook up your antenna to the 722.

The no phone connection fee is just that, has nothing to do with second tuner. There is NO DVR fee with AEP.

I have my 722 hooked up to a phone line and the fee is waved because it is hooked up to a ethernet line and it counts as a SECOND tuner. Did not have it hooked up for a while and they charged me. As soon as I hooked it up the fee was waived.

Yep, what I said. Charge still has nothing to do with second tuner.

ALL
DVR fees are waived with AEP, I have a 722 and two 622's and do not pay any dvr fees. Landline phone will waive the additional tuner fee as will the dsl connection, but some of the Dish Home features do not work with dsl yet, but VOD will not work with the phone line connection. Pluses for both being connected depending on what you want. Also note that if you do not subscribe to locals, there will be no guide info for your OTA channels.

Thanks people the replies. That's good news on the self-install and no DVR fee. So my bill will be 97.98 + $10.00 + $5.00 (for the 508).

By the way -- I really like the Tivo for locals. The DVR functions (fast forward, fast backward, skip, etc). are super smooth especially compared to the 622 I used to have, which was very jerky. That was as of January 2008 when I returned it after my 18 month lease was up. Hopefully they've fixed it by now. If not, I can live with it.

I got a 3 year Tivo contract which gives me guide data, tons of free video on demand, access to buy Amazon Video on Demand movies, free YouTube, and numerous free podcasts. My monthly Tivo cost is $8.33 vs the $5.99 that it would be for Dish locals.

Another question comes to mind: I will connect the 722 to my phone line to avoid the second-tuner fee. But will I now have to connect the 508 to a phone line too?

Actually, VOD will work with the phone line connection without a broadband connection. It is DishONLine (downloading content via the internet) that will not function without a broadband connection. I understand the confusion.

I have a Tivo Series 3 for OTA and just got a 722K with the dual OTA tuner module. I will say that the Tivo Series 3 (THX certified--there really is a technical reason why the Series 3 does indeed produce a better PQ than the Tivo HD, although the HDXL should have a PQ very close to the Series 3) does output the best HD image compared to Dish ViP boxes. I give the 222 & the 222K a very close 2nd, and the 722K almost as good at 3rd place, then the 722 a noticalbe 4th place, but still very good image.

Tivo is a good product, but overall, the Dish Vip's are superior to the best Tivo has to offer. The download content is far ahead of Dish, but that is about it.

My Tivo is a Series 3 also.

I just got the Vip722 activated and there were no surprises. Called at 1:30 AM Pacific Time and actually got to talk to a nice English speaking person named Dan from Colorado. In the past when I have called in the day I have gotten someone in India with a thick accent which was very hard to understand. I guess it pays to call in the middle of the night.

I plugged in both the ethernet cable and the phone line. At first neither one worked. Then after I called and activated the 722 the ethernet magically started working. So I'll be better off using that instead of the phone line.

It seems that fast forward and rewind are much improved from when I had the Vip 622 over a year ago.

And the HD number of HD channels has increased dramatically! I'm very happy with this new receiver. I might end up watching TV all night!
