VIP211 & Hopper remote compatibility

I purchased a VIP211 off Ebay. It came with a Hopper 54 remote. Seller swears he used the remote with this 211. Everything I read leads to me believe this is not possible. Am I missing something? Thanks.

Let's be clear, there is a 5.4 remote for 211s and a 54 remote for Hoppers and Wallys. Which one do you have:

This is the 5.4 remote for 211s.

This is the 54 remote for Hoppers and Wallys.

The 54 remote will not work for the 211. The 54 remote is RF and the 211 can't see that because it is an IR receiver only. The 5.4 is an IR remote.

Another note, the 211 will work with a 20 or 21 remote as well.
