Channel Notes:

Channel Range: HD channels currently occupy RF frequencies 75-78
Modulation: QAM256 w/3 HD channels per QAM frequency - 38.8Mb/3 = 12.93Mbs per HD channel.
Channel History: On May 15, 2004 WBDC-DT (RF 77.2 Washington WB) and WETA-DT (RF 77.3 Washington PBS) were replaced by HDNet and HDNet Movies. They have not reappeared.

Upcoming Channels: Adelphia has been running commercials on a local access channel about "more HD channels coming soon" since January/February 2005. In late March, they placed an ad in the local Fredericksburg newspaper, Freelance Star, that states more channels coming soon. Adelphia has national licenses to carry:

PBS-HD: http://www.ncta.com/press/press.cfm?PRid=597&showArticles=ok
ESPN2-HD: http://espnsportsfigures.com/ESPNToday/2005/Jan_05/espn2hd_debut.htm
Discovery-HD: http://www.adelphiasocal.com/12132004

Channels Update 4/29/2005: Adelphia has completed 75% of their headend rebuild and they will not have capacity to carry additional HD channels until the rebuild is complete. Adelphia Spotsy plans to add more HD channels at that time and mirror what other area Adelphia offices are providing (16 HD channels). In a nutshell, they are a few months away from adding more HD channels.

Channels Update 2/6/2006: WETA-DT (PBS) added to the lineup in December.

Equipment Update 5/23/2005: It appears that Terayon has a product that will allow cable operators to deliver 4 channels of full HDTV over a single 256 QAM channel. Also, they can stuff up to 32 channels of regular digital video down a single channel. (Their hype, of course!) If true, it seems bandwidth should be less of an issue. I suspect, but cannot confirm whether the local office is using these as part of their headend rebuild. As you may or may not know, the Spotsy Cable Plant serves as a backup site for all of Adelphia's NOVA operation. http://www.yenra.com/hdtv/

Firewire Update 7/4/2005: I received this lawyerly letter from Adelphia in reply to my filing a complaint with the FCC. Without rehashing the past (you can read previous posts if you wish), here are the highlights:

1. What Adelphia's lawyer fails to mention is that the local Adelphia Plant Manager read Section 76.640 of the CFR and agreed that Adelphia was not in compliance with the law. He further agreed to provide me with a "Firewire Enabled" SA8300HD DVR as-soon-as-possible. I have voice mail recorded at my office as well as verbal commitment given to a member of the local franchise authority. (the FCC will have these items shortly) Adelphia, like all cable providers, has been skirting this issue since the CFR does not specifically state "HD DVR".

2. Adelphia's attorney blatantly lied when he stated, "Moreover, it is Scientific-Atlanta that has not provided the necessary software to active these ports and any attempt by Adelphia to do so would violate our license with them." This is a complete fabrication of facts! In mid-April, I spoke directly to a SA Cable Support Engineer and, in confidence, she told me the firmware has been fully tested and available to all Cable MSOs since February...however, because of their contract with the Cable MSOs, she is not supposed to reveal this fact. (could get fired)

3. Adelphia stated to the FCC that, "rest assured that, in accordance with Section 76.640, Adelphia will be offering HD-DVR boxes with the capabilities desired by XXXXXX after July 1, 2005." Hmmm. Again, since the CFR mentioned nothing about HD DVRs, in order to arrive at this epiphany you must first conclude that firewire enabled ports must be offered on similar devices with similar features (i.e. HD DVR) back on April 1, 2004 - clearly that was the intent of this law.

Not that it is 4 July 2005, will Adelphia 'magically' be provided with firmware and drivers to enabled the dual firewire ports on the SA8300HD DVR? Notice how cleverly Adelphia crafted the words, "after July 1, 2005." July 1, 2006 is after...so is July 1, 2007...as is July 1, 2009...etc.

I am currently with Dish/VOOM HD Pak and have a 942 HD DVR - couldn't be happier!!! However, I would love to test the waters and see if Adelphia will provider someone, anyone, with a firewire enabled SA8300HD DVR.

Any takers?

Equipment Offered:

Connecting SA3250HD to a HDTV

Current Issues:

Purchased by Comcast : Time Warner/Comcast recently purchased Adelphia Cable. Comcast will take ownership of Adelphia's Virginia operations to include their Fredericksburg/Spotsylvania/Stafford customers:
Fredericksburg.com - Corporate couple acquires Adelphia
Firewire: ongoing battle to get Adelphia to support Firewire enabled SA8300HD DVR.
Verizon FTTP: Verizon discussing possible Franchise Agreement with Spotsylania County. Verizon is wanting to bring Fiber to the Premises (FTTP) and offer broadband and video services to new homes and existing homes requesting these services in Spotsylvania County. Very interesting reading: Verizon's Universal Appeal and Spotsylvania County Cable Commission - February 2005 Minutes
Headend Upgrade - 4/29/2005: I was informed the Spotsy plant serves as a backup site for Northern Virginia areas. I'm not sure of the specifics nor how that may affect local residents. I asked if the Spotsy plant was planning to build-out beyond 750Mhz since we serve as a regional backup site. I was told there will most likely be no major modifications over the next 9-12 months until Comcast takes ownership.

Channel Update 4/2/2006: Noticed WJLA-DT chaned their channels names sometime over the past months...

Old Channels
WJLA-DT, 7.1, 14.000 mbs
WJLA-DT2, 7.2, 2.512 mbs

New Channels

Arlington

Well, it's been 16 months since Verizon formally filed a Cable TV franchise application and Arlington has yet to award Verizon with a Cable TV franchise. All I can say is the game is almost up for these these local franchise authorities (aka collusive cable cronies and extortionists extraordinaire) now that Cable Reform legislation has passed and will be placed into effect on 1 July. If I lived in Arlington, I would contact my local Cable TV administrator/commission and voice my extreme displeasure. Residents in Fairfax are now paying less and enjoying their FiOS TV. Arlington residents have only themselves, and their Local Franchise Nazis, to blame!

16 months and counting...the shame of it all.

Funny Story...

...regarding the local Adelphia/Comcast.

My local cable headend engineer has been promising, "more HD channels will be added before the year is over" now that Comcast has taken over Adelphia. As it turns out Comcast will be dropping HDNET, HDNET Movies, and INHD2 in December due to contract issues. They will be replaced by TNTHD, DiscoveryHD and ESPN2HD. Not exactly what I call beefing up the HD lineup.
