Vonage Holdings Corp. remains the leader of the voice-over-IP (VoIP) market, even though
such large MSOs as Time Warner Cable and Cablevision Systems are quickly closing the gap.
Vonage reported earlier today that it has now activated more than 1 million VoIP lines
across North America, making it the first IP telephony provider to do so.
Vonage's latest surge puts it more than 300,000 subscribers ahead of Time Warner, its
closest cable rival. But Time Warner, which closed the second quarter with 614,000 VoIP
subscribers, has been growing at a faster pace than Vonage this year and could still match
its total by the end of the year. Plus, Cablevision Systems, which finished the first
half of the year with nearly 480,000 customers, may not be all that far behind as it
enjoys strong VoIP growth.
