Other than media reports on the rumor, that's all it is now according to
Voom, rumor. But that's not to be un-expected. When two companies are
negotiation of a buyout, everyone is hush-hush until the official
announcement. I personally wouldn't be surprised if the rumor is true, but
other than Voom and Echostar corporate, I doubt anyone knows for certain.

Subject: Re: [VOOM] OTA antenna question

what is known about Voom being acquired by Echo star
and if there is anything to this story. It sounds
reasonable to me but I want to know if it has any real
substance to it as direct has a very clear plan to
deal with HD as the main and only service it offers by
the end of 2005.

I'm enjoying my VOOM service very much, but whats so attractive to E*?
It's not like they're buying up major competition, maybe 30K subs.
At this point in time I just dont see it. But what do I know ?

With that being said, what happens to people who took the 1yr
commitment ? Would we be expected to stay on board ??

First, I hope this rumor is completely wrong. I have little faith that if E* buys Voom for
"more capacity" they will keep using it to serve up so much HD. I would be afraid that the
bandwith would be reallocated for local channel expansion into additional cities, since
there is so much more money in that than using that same bandwith for HD channels.

I don't know if oft-quoted math directly applies, but I have heard that each block of
bandwith used for HD can be split into about 12 channels of SD. If each market averages
about 6 local channels, E* could kill all the HD on Voom and enter a lot of new local
markets. This would be very lucrative for them in the short-term.

I'm under the impression that even if all 30K Voom subs quit the new service in protest, E*
could replace their revenue by just entering 1-3 local markets with SD local channel
availability. And the capacity math (if true) would allow a whole lot more than 1-3 local
markets to be entered.

I would have very little faith that E* might buy Voom, keep the Voom service somewhat "as
is" and make available the Dish 500 package of SD channels or similar. The dollars will
drive the decisions, and the dollars would probably say kill the HD and make a lot more by
entering tons of new local markets with SD locals. Worry about HD channels at D*
(spaceway, etc.) and/or Cable later.

There is no "rumor". If you read the article linked in the earlier post,
you'll see the pure speculation about a *possible* sale to Echostar at some
later date was made by a no-name analyst at some firm that I've never heard
of before. It makes no sense that Cablevision would be spinning off Voom now
if a sale was desirable or on the horizon.

Keep in mind these are the same group of people(the analysts) saying Voom is
doomed to close the doors within a year. Take your pick of which "rumor" you
want to believe. None of them have any credibility at this point.

My guess is the one yr commitment will be converted or
honored as this isnt going to happen tomorrow. Direct
tv isnt going to have its 500 channel HD universe till
late 05 and the 1500 channels by late 07 so Echo star
has time to let your 1 yr commitment to run out. I am
sure once the buy out is done and Rainbow will eat a
lot of crow echostar will get the bird at a great
discount versus sending up a new one. Tech changes and
so would the cost of a new and improved bird with
great capacity and reliablity. So Rainbow will have to
shed it at a huge loss.
Good try no cigar!

Bob is correct. There is no rumor. It's pure speculation from a few analysts that never
supported vOom since Cablevision started talking about it. They will keep saying that, and
when people hear this repeated over and over, some will start believing it. Please put this
useless rumor to bed and let's help Wilt and others to make vOom a success.

That said, Wilt, how is the PVR coming along? :)

I dought we will see a PVR until we are switched over
to Echostar! ;)

Thought that the PVR was to be released here in
October! and todays the last day!

I will be calling tomorrow to cancel and go over to
D*TV. I have heard they are having specials to switch
users over from other sat and cable Co.
I have been hurt by these so called upgrades and my
receiver getting hung up when I had a party over to
watch the Dallas Cowboys! This is my main reason for
cancelling! how embearasing having a nice 61 inch
samsung DLP HDTV and throw a party and inviting over
12 friends and to find out at the last minute that
both of my receivers are fubar! luckly my old D*TV
dish was still up! and luchly I told the Voom
installers not to touch that cable! and luckly my best
friend went and got his receiver!!!!! Yeah so what it
wasn't in HDTV but we still got to watch the game!

I am sick and tired of paying a company to Beta test
their equipment!

Asta La Vista baby!
