Monsters HD Scares Up WB Films

Voom HD Networks’ Monsters HD has a big monkey on its back.

The network said Tuesday that it has acquired 44 classic and contemporary horror titles from Warner Bros. Domestic Cable Distribution, including the original 1933 King Kong, Son of Kong and Mighty Joe Young.

The network said all of the films have been digitally restored, and they will air uncut, uninterrupted and in HD. Many of them will air in HD for the first time, Monsters HD added.

“While the horror genre continues to thrive and fuel the box office with big-screen remakes like Peter Jackson's King Kong, this acquisition reflects our commitment as TV's No. 1 destination for the monster-movie fan,” Monsters HD senior vice president and general manager David Sehring said in a prepared statement.

Also included in the mix of classic and contemporary films are Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot, Clive Barker’s Hellraiser franchise and Tobe Hooper’s Poltergeist.

The deal comes as Universal Studios prepares to release Peter Jackson’s epic King Kong remake in theaters. A digitally restored HD print of the original King Kong will run without commercial interruption on Monsters HD before the end of the year.

CHANNEL SECURES EXCLUSIVE HDTV RIGHTS TO PACKAGE OF FILMS IN DEAL WITH WARNER BROS. DOMESTIC CABLE DISTRIBUTION

Acquisition Provides High-Definition Programmer Restoration Rights to Over 40 Classic and Contemporary Horror Flicks To Air Beginning 2005

New York, November 8, 2005 -- Monsters HD, the first-ever and only 24-hour channel exclusively devoted to the horror and creature feature category, today announced the acquisition of 44 classic and contemporary horror titles from Warner Bros. Domestic Cable Distribution that will air in HD, beginning 2005. Among the titles is the recently restored version of the original 1933 KING KONG as well as RKO's SON OF KONG and MIGHTY JOE YOUNG. Monsters HD is one of 10 high-definition core channels currently available through VOOM HD Networks, the largest and most diverse suite of high definition channels nationwide and currently available on DISH Network.

The multi-year licensing deal adds to Monsters HD's impressive specialty library of horror and creature features, the largest collection amassed for television to date. All the films, which have been digitally restored, will be shown uncut, uninterrupted and in high definition. Many of the titles will be broadcast in hi-def on TV for the first time.

Last August, VOOM HD announced its distribution agreement with Echostar Communications to carry ten of the HD channels on its Dish Network. Since then, it has gone on to produce groundbreaking original HD content for a wide variety of consumer interests ranging from a one-of-a-kind live memorabilia auction on Gallery HD to delivering the world of fashion on ULTRA HD. Most recently, VOOM HD solidified a co-production deal with Singapore. On the heels of all of this, the Warner Bros. deal confirms VOOM's commitment to growing and to investing in the brand's aggressive move into the marketplace.

Titles anchoring the package include the Stephen King thrillers SALEM'S LOT, RETURN TO SALEM'S LOT and CHILDREN OF THE CORN and Clive Barker's HELLRAISER, HELLBOUND: HELLRAISER 2 and NIGHTBREED. In addition, the original version of KING KONG, which hit theatres in 1933, will be broadcast in high definition for the first time on Monsters HD. Also included are: Tobe Hooper's POLTERGEIST and Larry Cohen's Monster Baby Trilogy IT'S ALIVE; IT LIVES AGAIN and IT'S ALIVE 3: ISLAND OF THE ALIVE.

In addition, the agreement gives the channel exclusive HD broadcast rights to prehistoric horror films from stop motion/special effects artists & pioneers like Willis O'Brien; Ray Harryhausen and Jim Danforth. Features set to air on Monsters HD include O'Brien's BLACK SCORPION and GIANT BEHEMOTH; Harryhausen's THE BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS, ONE MILLION YEARS B.C. and CLASH OF THE TITANS; and Danforth's WHEN DINOSAUR'S RULED THE EARTH.

David Sehring, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Monsters HD, noted: "While the horror genre continues to thrive and fuel the boxoffice with big screen remakes like Peter Jackson's King Kong, this acquisition reflects our commitment as TV's number one destination for the monster movie fan. We have amassed the finest and widest variety of creature features and horror thrillers that Hollywood and the world has to offer. These Warner Bros. titles will look stunning and terrifying in Hi Definition!"

He added: "Watching horror films in HD really adds an exciting edge to the movie watching experience that will rattle the nerves of even the most ardent horror film fanatic. The quality of color, clarity, sound and amazing sensory overload is truly impressive and gives you access to a front row theatre seat in your own living room."

Eric Frankel, President, Warner Bros. Domestic Cable Distribution said: "We are pleased to become a major supplier to Monsters HD and believe that these films are perfectly suited for this exciting new network and are sure that they will scare up viewers."

Michael Russo, Senior Vice President, Warner Bros. Domestic Cable Distribution said: "It is especially gratifying that these films will be able to be enjoyed in a definition and detail like never before by both fans of these films and viewers who will see them for the very first time. We hope this is the beginning of a very mutually beneficial relationship."

I watched "Count Yorga" on Monsters last night. It was fun watching it in HD. I've always loved the last 10 minutes of that movie.

If they show the original uncut version of the 1933 King Kong, many may be surprised at how "racy" it is.

Here's to hoping for a quick return of Cinema10...may they all be as well done as Monsters HD.

Question for the "old school voomers"...I know that in the early Voom days, there were 12 movie channels- Cinema 10, Monsters, and Epics. The Cinema 10 channels were set apart because they weren't themed, and they showed only one movie repeatedly each day. Right?

But somewhere along the line, they themed all of the channels. And they either dropped Epics, or changed it into The Majestic. Either way, Voom dropped a movie channel when they added Equator.

So why do people still refer to "the return of Cinema 10", or "the rest of Cinema 10", or refer to Monsters separately from Cinema 10? Habit? I suppose the other channels do have the "two a day" format that's still different from Monsters.

Cinema10 morphed and was rebranded at least twice. The final themed product was: Family Room, World Cinema, Film Fest, Kung FU, GuyTV, ha ha HD, Majestic, Vice, Gunslingers and Divine. Initially they played a single move each day, then two, and some even more as I recall.

I remember the Epics channel getting replaced with Equator (not necessarily at the same time) and Epics programming being show on Majestic, Film Fest and perhaps even World Cinema as they continued to tinker with programming formats. Personally, I refer to the movie channels as Cinema10 by force of habit and because they were an ongoing experiment right until the very end. Hopefully, the VOOM HD library has grown, and will continue to expand, in order to support at least 10 full time movie channels.

Cinema 10 was an experiment that took its final shape in January 2005 -- Family Room, World Cinema, Fu, Divine, Guytv, Majestic, vice, filmfest, ha ha, and gunslingers. I think I've go all 10 of what we called Cinema 10 channels. Monsters HD was never part of the 10 Cinema channel since from the beginning it had its own identity and it was well proclaimed as a success since day 1. The format of Monsters HD also was different. It has been running like a channel where 5 and up to 10 movies are played per day.

The Cinema 10 concept was to have 10 Cinematic channels that will show one movie per day and have it available at any time of the day. That concept is good if there is no DVR. But given that most people will have DVR, the concept goes out of the window. We proposed the change of the 10 Cinematic format from 1 movie per day to two movies per day. Now instead of getting 10 movies per day one will will get 20 movies per day besides Monsters HD.

Epics was a concept that was not well taken by us. We thought that it had to do with Epics Cinematic type of movies but we soon found out that it was not what Rainbow had in mind. We never understood what Epic was all about and soon we saw that Epics was dropped and instead Equator HD was born. Equator HD was better defined and the vision of its content was there for everyone to understand. The content of Epics HD was distributed among the 10 Cinema HD channes and Rave HD. So Epics was not gone. We can still find its content within the Cinema HD channesl and other Voom channels.

When Voom DBS went down and only GuyTV and Majestic remained, we proposed the increase of 4 movies per day and it was great. Two months later the format went back to 2 movies per day.

There is also another channel that it is in the works but never took off. Doc HD. This was not a real channel but an experiment with lots of potential but difficult content to obtain. Doc HD = Documentary HD channel. I hope it some day can come back as its own channel.

Rainbow has a good library of movies to and they continue to increase their movie library. I received lots of information that all 21 VOOM channels will go back online on E* and they will go back to the same standard or level that we were getting before. We used to get approximately 40-60 new titles per month.
