Well, I cancelled Dish

I leased two 211's, and they told me they will send me two boxes with shipping labels. Each one will cost me $15 to send receivers back. They also want the LNB back in one of the boxes. I asked why I have to pay shipping, and they said that's the policy. Is this right? I asked if someone could pick them up and they said no. It seems like it's their way of sticking it to you for cancelling.

wrong iceberg. as of 2-1-2010, any canceling cust who uses a dish supplied ups label will be charged 15.00 per label used. they can opt to use the packaging and pay shipping themselves, but if UPS scans in that label and dish is billed for it, they bill the customer back for it.

That is correct, you are the first person I have heard about having to deal with it though. You really don't have a choice, if you don't return the receivers you'll get charged a lot more than $30.

I see this becoming a big problem for Dish and a PR nightmare. I wouldn't be surprised to see them change that and start paying for shipping again, but that wont help you.

how retarded is that? seriously....so you have to pay to send back the equipment?

Damn whats next...Dish charges you outrageous fees for the privilege to use their equipment? oh wait...too late on that one ;)

it is in the dha agreements for leased equipement.

"Equipment Return: You may use the equipment provided under this promotion only while you remain an active customer in good standing and in compliance with this Agreement. You must return all such equipment in good operating condition, normal wear and tear excepted, within 30 days following downgrade or disconnection. You must call DISH at 800-333-DISH immediately after your downgrade or disconnection to receive a return authorization number and delivery instructions for return of your equipment. You are responsible for and shall bear all costs and expenses of returning such equipment. A $15.00 charge will apply if you use a pre-paid label and empty box provided by DISH in returning your equipment; this charge is subject to change at any time.'

If I am canceling service and my bill is paid up, my response to this sort of charge would be "sue me". it's insane that Dish would charge a departing customer a nickel to make them send the equipment back. I would send them the equipment, but just try to charge me! I'll make sure that if you finally collect the $15, you would have spent hundreds and thousands of dollars in the process!

So in other words its a smart idea to pay for a $15 service call for a "de-install" instead and have them returned via warehouse? Seems better than returning the receivers at $15 a pop.

Of course Dish being the giant corporation that does not really care will just turn it over to a collections agency. It is just another case of Dish trying to be the cable pig. I guess they watched their own commercial too many times and decided that all the fees would be good for business. Cable must have known something.

NO, I am not under a commitment anymore. After I hung up with Dish I thought of something I should have asked. So I assume I use the labels provided, and take the boxes to ANY UPS store? Has anyone done this? And do I pay UPS $30, or does Dish bill me? I'm too disgusted to call Dish again. Thanks.

Well, that pretty much cinches it for me. Was debating whether to stay with D* now that my contract is up or go for slightly lower per-month cost with E*. But with all the stuff about HD-Lite and now this apparent nickel-and-dime BS, I think I will stay exactly where I am.

Doesn't the cable company also require you to return THEIR equipment when you leave? My recollection is you have to drop them off at a service location or office, so I don't really see this as a lot different.

Send back all boxes but one before you cancel to avoid the extra $15 fees then later on cancel. If you done that then would you only be subjected to one $15 fee or would they charge you a minimum of $30 no matter what (one for the receiver and one for the lnb)?

So I guess those that got a leased 522 to replace their owned 721 is going to get kicked in the shins twice as they not only didn't get to own a receiver anymore but have to pay a penalty of $15 and return the unit. What a SCAM!

That may be true, but if you have a few boxes it is a lot cheaper to drive over to the local cable office and drop them off. If you could turn them into any Dish retailer it would be different.

I returned 2 boxes to my cable company office. It took me five minutes to get there and it didn't cost me $30 for the privilege.
