I think in most situations an omni is not a good choice price/performance wise. Most of us have most of our stations coming in from from the same tower or same mountain so an omni is wasted. It picks up signal (and noise and ghosts) from all directions whereas a small yagi/log will have gain over an omni and pickup signals (and noise and ghosts) from only the direction it's pointed. From a gain standpoint omnis are way overpriced.

For a hell of a deal on a good sized log see http://www.solidsignal.com/prod_display.asp?main_cat=03&CAT=&PROD=SPR7032 ...it'll pickup three times the signal on UHF compared to an omni.

Of course if you have close in stations from multiple directions or if a yagi/log looks ugly to you or your spouse an omni is what you need.
