I had read before, some time ago, about this but have not seen any conclusion regarding it. The problem is that for OTA digital channels, Dish or the local network has tagged the subchannels as NR/AO and since I have four kids and use channel locks, ratings locks, etc... I have to put in the stinking password everytime I want to look at the local doppler radar image.

What do you do about this?

this is because the radar channel is not rated which is the NR of that setting in the locks menu of the dish receiver. you can unlock that setting and not have to deal with that issue or just punch in the password each time you want to view the radar channel. I know that is not what you want to hear but that is the only current possibilities

It's not the "NR" that causes the password need, but the "AO" part, which stands for "Adult Oriented". That is what causes the need for the password. There are many shows that come on with an NR and do not require the use of the password. I just wondered if anyone knew who needed to remove the "AO" part of the rating - Dish or my local affiliate. I don't know who to complain to start the process of getting that fixed.

Rev Donald "Wild Man" Wildmon forced them to do this. He declared that weather forcasters were "...wizards in league with the devil..." ;)

Seriously, they don't know what's on those channels. I think they always do that if they have no info on the programming. Most of the PI channels are set to AO all the time.

I don't mean to be a jerk, but maybe pressing 4 buttons to see the weather is the price you pay for not being willing/able to watch four kids 24/7.

I've complained about this several times. In the 811 software these same subchannels are just plain NR instead of NR/AO. I don't know why Dish can't just change the 622 software to behave the same way.

It seems to me that channel locks are the only way to be safe anyway. I just locked down my system all the way to PG, and I was able to tune into Soap Operas, CSI, an Alanis Morrisette concert, "The Flesh Eaters" on Monsters HD, Jerry Springer, Benny Hill, Fear Factor, ect.

The ratings are applied inconsistently and unfairly as well. On Comedy Central, South Park gets an AO, but not Chappelle's Show or anything else. The only things that would get filtered out on Comedy Central are theatrical movies, but they are so heavily censored, they are probably the cleanest thing they air.

Likewise, BBC America only gives an AO ratings to Footballers Wives, even though they feature many many programs that would get a TV-MA in the US. In fact, they allow "swears" that are bleeped on the "Adults Only" South Park.

And the AO rating seems too harsh for many of these programs anyway. Cartoon Network's "Moral Oral" may be tasteless, but it certainly doesn't deserve to be on the same level as hardcore porn.
