Where's the switch

Hi,
New to the forums and looked around for an answer but no luck.

We have a dish network 500 with two receivers. #2 works most always except really bad weather. #1 with a 522 receiver sometimes works but has not for most of the past two months and presently has not worked at all for 5 weeks. Phone help is useless except for wanting to send out a tech.

We continually get an error 502 for a faulty switch. Switch check goes into the 38 tests for both 110 and 119. Cables seem good with correct length conductors both to the splitter and between the splitter and the 522.

My question is where do they put the switch? Is it on the roof with the dish? It's not in the basement or the tv room where the cables exit the wall.

Confused in upstate NY,
Gerry

What switch are you looking for? It should tell you what type on the check switch results. Are you sure it's not the splitters that may be causing you problems. Since you state the check switch goes through 38 steps, that tells us you are using legacy equipment, but splitters are not recommended on this type of equpment, Check this and give more info as to the type.

Not necessarily.

If the receiver isn't getting any signal, by default it will do a 38 step test versus a 2, 3 or 4 step test.

By splitter, I'm assuming you mean the DP Separator. Given that you have a 500 dish, you probably have a DP PLUS twin LNB. The switch is inside of that. If you are getting a 38 step test instead of a 3 step test, then the LNB and receiver aren't seeing each other. Take the wires off the LNB and check for voltage on the center conductor of those wires. You can do this with a volt/ohm meter (red to center, black to nut) or just touch both parts of the wire to your tongue (feels like a 9v battery). If you have voltage, switch the wires at the dish and see if the problem moves over to the other receiver. If it does, you have a bad LNB. If the problem stays on the 522, then try placing the other receiver in that location and see if it does the check switch fine. If it passes, then you have a bad 522. If it doesn't pass, then the cable between the receiver and LNB needs to be inspected and possibly replaced.
