why do we have C-SPAN and C-SPAN2 but not C-SPAN3?

C-SPAN is short for Cable SATELLITE Public Affairs Network. Dish Network (another SATELLITE service) has it too.

and if you don't like how our government is run move to another country, I sure as hell won't miss you.

CSPAN legislation was inacted and created out of a compromise with the terrestrial, cable industries and the FCC. Just political hack stuff.

However, Real Americans stay and work for change. They don't run. They don't allow bad unjust and stupid acts of government to continue. They press for living up to the ideals and promises of the founders. Political free speech is the liberty to safely stand up and criticize our leaders.

DirectTv and Dish don't really need to waste bandwidth on these channels. Why add more?

your government conspiracy theories and talk radio rhetoric belong on a private blog, not a TV forum. lets get back on topic please.

the only thing wasting bandwidth is Division IV college sports and Cricket channels.

If you guys are finished puting each other down, the actual CSPAN3 answer follows:

DBS as a condition of its liscense is required to carry so many "public interest" stations. CSPAN counts, obviously. However, to protect a "diversity of viewpoints" no more than two "public interest" stations can be from the same owners (the FCC was worried that the providers would just find some half-baked ranter and let him have 40 channels to rant on). So CSPAN3 does not count as a public interest channel for DBS, so there is no incentive to carry it.

CSPAN has asked for an exception, but been turned down.

he's expressing his opinion on cspan which is his right just like it's your right to express your opinion. he considers it's a waste of bandwidth to add that channel which i tend to agree with. you don't feel the same way that's great. you want your opinion respected start by respecting other opinions from our fellow members.:)

if you want my respect show me some first. all you guys ever do is argue with me and insult me and disagree with me no matter what i say. In my opinion NFL Sunday Ticket is a waste of bandwidth. so is MLB Extra Innings, NHL Center Ice, NBA League Pass, MLS Direct Kick, ESPN Full Court, ESPN Game Plan, Cricket Ticket, NASCAR Hot Pass, NCAA Mega March Madness, Sports Pack, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNews, ESPNU, ESPN Classic, NHL Network, NBA TV, CBS College Sports Network. would you be mad if they didnt have those channels? YES! would you be mad if they took them away? YES. so stop singling me out when I'm mad that a channel I want isn't available and say "its a waste of bandwidth". and like i said before if you don't want to hear my opinion dont read my threads. and stop saying "go to another provider". NO I NEVER WILL!

its only 1 SD channel for god sakes. there 500 sports channels. its not fair.

I honestly did not even know it was available as a channel. That said, if they add it great, if they do not, great. I imagine there are far more popular channels to add at this point, after those are online, go for it

Thanks for providing the answer to the question. It seems to me that the people left reading this are not so intrested in the answer.

I'm NOT trying to argue. I got the answer (even though I think its another ridiculous and lame excuse) so continuing this thread is pointless.

what happened to the customer is always right? if the customer gives you their money you should give them the channels they ask for. how is that bad business?
Which is why there are other choices for customers (i.e. other providers). It is this freedom of choice that allows you to pick a provider that does provide more of what you want.

Providers cannot give every customer what they want. Not only is there inventory restrictions (bandwidth in this case), there is also licensing and cost restrictions. It similar to going to one grocery store and complaining that they don't carry something another store does. It is impossible for every store to carry every single thing that every single customer wants. They have to base their inventory on demand and sales with profit and inventory space. Good thing there are other stores that do carry what you may want.

dude what part of I'M NOT GETTING ANOTHER PROVIDER did you not understand? I think I've said it on this thread at least 5 times. I'll explain it again.

there are 3 TV providers in my area: DirecTV, Dish Network and Comcast.

I used to have Comcast but i cancelled them because I HATE the way they run their company (less channels, higher prices is their new motto) and they refuse to add any HD channels, therefore I WILL NEVER RETURN TO THEM OR ANY OTHER CABLE PROVIDER FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE FOR ANY REASON

I'm NOT getting Dish Network because A. they don't have MLB Network, which I really like watching here on DirecTV. and B. they don't have a channel reserved for Fox Sports Detroit overflow so there's a chance I'd miss alot of Tigers games since they have exclusive rights to the Tigers, Pistons and Red Wings.

Therefore, I'm sticking with DirecTV. No if, ands or buts.

maybe I should just move to Canada. Their CRTC (unlike our FCC) doesn't let any provider have exclusive access to any channel or sports package; NFL Sunday Ticket is on every cable and satellite company! I wish our government cared about ending monopolies and anti-competitive practices!

The Public Interest channels regulation only allows 1 channel per owner to be counted towards the PI mandatory count. This does not preclude DBS from carrying additional channels from that owner, but only 1 counts towards the PI minimums.

Examples:
KTV counts as a PI channel, Angel 1 and Angel 2 do not. All owned by the same company.

CCTV counts as a PI Channel. The other 5 CCTVs don't

CSPAN counts as a PI channel. CSPAN 2 doesn't.

See EKB: Free Public Interest Programming Package

Why doesn't DirecTV have C-SPAN3? Its one of the few channels I miss since I left Comcast (I'll never go back though so don't even try to "convince" me). I already wrote to DirecTV (so don't tell me to do that either) and of course got another canned response "we have no plans to add this channel, we don't care what you want, stop bothering us" etc.

I just wanted some insight on why we only have 2 of a trio of channels.
I have the same question, i could only watch it on my computer, but i was asked for my carrier, and password for my Directv? And why was direct tv involved?... for my internet to watch it?

DIRECTV Hi, Michael. This is simply a way of authenticating your account, and that the selected channel is part of your selected cable package. Thanks for reaching out to us! - William P, Social Media Specialist

Unfortunately, its a channel that's part of a cable subscription, So you still has to sign in to watch an extension of the network. -Sharonda M. Social Media Specialist

Im going to guess that just like ESPN 3 online, you have to have a subscription to a TV provider thats why they ask?
