It never left... you could access YTTV from the Youtube Roku channel

True, but the YTTV app never went away, only new users could not download it.

^This. It was no longer in the Roku app store, so even if you were a longtime user and needed to reinstall the YTTV app for bug fixing purposes, you couldn't get it back. But yes, the regular YouTube work-around was still in play, but that would've been gone (for new users and re-installers) on Dec. 9 without the new deal.
