YTTV location verification

Well, my brother ran into problems with Hulu, so my dad made the executive decision to get Spectrum. I helped my dad install the Spectrum app on their Rokus. The nice thing about that is, there is no logging in to do. It automatically detects they are on a Spectrum Internet connection with TV service and just works. The downside is now my parents have a new app to learn how to use.

That likely is your best solution to prevent future issues like this. Sometimes the best solution isn't the cheapest solution. I will say Spectrum is good to give deals too. If you call them every 12 months or so they'll usually make another deal to keep you around. I doubt Hulu had all of the local channels YTTV did either, which may have created another headache for you.

Hulu did have all the locals they needed. Not sure if the Spectrum plan they got has all the sports my mom will want as my dad didn't really know what he got. I guess we'll find out the first time my mom can't find some game she wants to watch.

That's surprising, as Hulu seems to be missing one or more affiliates in most markets. I had Spectrum until recently with a Cable Card & TiVo, and their plan structure is a mess. The do have several "tiers" you can add on to get most of the sports channels without having to pay for a higher dollar package. It would just depend on what she wants to watch. I had their lowest package, and then added on an "Entertainment View" tier that gave me all of the other ESPN stations I needed, NFL Network, MLB Network, etc. Another advantage is you can do most of the management online, so if you get them to give you their Spectrum login information you can manage it remotely if they need changes made.

I hadn't heard Hulu had that limitation.

These are their locals on Hulu. Note that NBC and CBS are on the same station:

According to my dad, they ended up with a package that has all the sports channels, so that's good. As for online account management, the concept of keeping track of usernames and passwords seems to have lost any appeal to my father. When I asked him if he knew his Spectrum login, he told me he'd rather spend hours on the phone with Spectrum than keep track of another password. It sounded like they are starting to figure out the app, and he somehow got a free Xumo box for my mom's TV. 🤞

Make 2 accounts...you can put one on pause when not using it

What I do with my parents, thay can't remember much, let alone passwords anymore .... any time something has to be changed, I make sure that Me or my Neice are there and we help Dad make the change, then we put it in our phone or wallet or something so we have them ...

Password Managers. Whether you go with a built-in Manager like Chrome or Firefox, or one that's more integrated into the OS like BitWarden or Apple's Passwords app, it takes the pain out of generating and remembering credentials.

In the case of Apple, it can also be shared between family members, so you could be included in a shared passwords group. BitWarden has similar features, and I'm sure other Password Managers share similar functionality.

I cannot recommend a password manager enough. you can create a shared vault by which one person can only see the passwords, not change them, while the other person(s) can modify. i find this really helpful with my parents who always somehow manage to delete something, but are generally savvy enough to know how copy and paste works.
