I heard from our IT department that MSoft will not support WinXP after 1/08 and therefore the OS could possibly stop working a few months later. Is this totally true?
Is WinXP done after January 2008?

They might stop supporting but it's not gonna stop working. I see no reason whatsoever to upgrade to Vista.

When Microsoft stops supporting an OS, that just means they will no longer create patches and/or service packs and phone support may also go out the window. But as stable as Windows XP with SP2 is, I don't think any more patches or service packs will ever be needed anyway. As others have said, I know people still running 98 and 2000 also, XP will still be in use for many, many years, and it will not stop working just because Microsoft stops supporting it.
You can still buy XP on business computers until January 2008. Machines aimed at individual users (ie. retail stores) are required to have Vista now. They will still support the system officially until 2009 when they will stop doing automatic updates (unless you pay for the extended support).
Speaking as someone who still uses XP with the "classic" folder views, I hate change. I hear that the new ribbon is universally hated as it throws most of our familiarity out the window, but supposedly you can change it back to a more familiar feel if you change a setting somewhere.
I'll probably be forced to get onboard when we next replace our office computers (probably at the end of 2008 or early 2009). With the exception of "Millenium", I can't remember an upgrade they've had that has been hated as much as this one has....

I'm a network specialist at a local company and our computer are mostly dell which offers a choice of XP or Vista only for businesses only. After Microsoft stops supporting XP, anybody will be forced to buy Vista and that is Microsoft's plan is to keep us spending money on upgrades. 
MS generally provides patches for 7 years after they stop selling. They are still selling XP and have extended the time the will sell XP into 2008. They will stop fixing problems though and only do security updates. Service pack 3 will probably be the end of the enhancements for XP.
I don't see MS ending support for XP as soon as 2008 as there are still issues with Vista and XP still being sold on computers. Some people are switching back from Vista to XP due to issues with compatability with some programs that people use.
I have nearly 20 years in IT. All the stop supporting XP means that Microsoft will no longer offer updates anymore. So if they find additional holes or security issues they wont fix them. Vista sucks so XP users will be around for a long time to come. Its all sales crap by Billy to make money.
Yeah, I just bought a Tablet with Win XP. It wasn't easy to find XP, but wasn't super hard either.
I'll never go to Vista if I can find a way to avoid it.

Vista is cool and all but yea Vista is a bust...its another Millenium
It turns out we just checked on this today. We sell an OEM system that uses XP. The answer for selling XP (not support as mentioned above) is:
31 Jan 08 -- End of selling XP through retail channels (my interpretation)
31 Jan 09 -- End of selling XP through OEM channels.

I wouldn't agree with that at all. My Vista machine is just as stable as any other machine I have, now. The first couple months were rough, but they seem to have smoothed some stuff out.
The only complaint I have, is that it is hard to install Wildblue with Vista... I still dual-boot XP for that.
Perhaps Vista is survivable, but is it worth the trouble?
The parallels to Me are undeniable except that Me had a happy alternative in W2K.
