The N

DishSubLa,

I have the family pack and it's not because it's considered a great family friendly package, Watch some of the programming on the channels like "most evil' on discovery times channel and I think The N is pretty darn tame. I have the family pack cause it has a few channels that otherwise I would have to get the top tier programming to receive and I just don't care enough about the rest to pay the price. However, if dish does not replace GAS with something, then I would consider that a price increase in the package.

Colours TV is quite edgy at times and I bet it rivals The N's content. What about The Outdoor Channel, watching animals being hunted and killed? I think that might be more bothersome to a child than Degrassi. Either way, anyone that thinks the family pack is a way to not monitor what kids are watching is in the dark (and I'm not saying you think this). Biography Channel is another one that I would consider at times to be more non-family friendly with it's content IF you consider family friendly all clean and nice and puppies and kitties. To me the family pack is simply a low priced package with something to appeal to everyone in a family with some restrictions on content and the way it is setup, to make a family want to upgrade, but to keep the same channels they get in the family pack, they have to jump 3 -4 packages upward at a nice premium in price.

Personally, I would prefer noggin replace GAS and keep The N in another package since I have two little ones at home. Also, Family pack does not contrew to me that families are only comprised of little children and 2 adults. A family comprises all age groups and The N could fill a decent void in the family pack for that age group.

I agree with what you have said. I actully like a few of the programs on the N. My point was that many of the parents who subscribe to Dish Family Pack would find the the open homosexual relationship between to male characters on Degrassi (they finally kissed in one episode) far more upsetting than even a messy killing (hunting) of a deer or the recounts of the horrors of Adolph Hitler or other evil dictators. One never really knows what horrors people will tolerate to be accessible to their kids, while being outraged because of a Degrassi episode. If they find Degrassi upsetting, then they should find all the other things you cited at least equally as upsetting.

You sound like a very reasonable person from your intelligent post above. Happy TV watching.

I agree, some parents could find The N objectionable, but I always like to point out that Degrassi: TNG airs unedited *on the public airwaves* in Canada. And the Degrassi: TNG syndicated reruns are actually edited by a board of affiliate relations of the US syndicator, to conform to "US broadcast standards" which are apparently (thanks to some of the aforementioned parents) much more restrictive than they are north of the border.

FWIW, I would also support adding Noggin to the Family Pack, even though I like the The N, because Noggin fits the mission of the Family Pack better IMO.

And yes, Noggin did run old Sesame Street episodes, until relatively recently in fact. Years ago, the Sesame Workshop (known at the time as the Children's Television Workshop) actually owned half of Noggin, and therefore a lot of CTW library programs like the Electric Company and Square One TV as well as Sesame Street were shown.

I think it would be great if The N would even bring back some of this programming for their mid-mornings when teens won't be watching anyway. But who knows? The one series they have promised to add is Saved By The Bell, which I'll admit is a teen TV mainstay. But I would like to see the 2 additional seasons of Out There which never aired in the US, and I would like them to bring back reruns of A Walk In Your Shoes. If they could also obtain the ABC Family reality series that were shown a few years ago, such as Switched and Knock First, that would also be great.

When I check the program guide for Nick GAS Channel 177 it is still showing the same GAS schedule for December 31st and further. On The N website it still shows that it will be on 169. The guide for Noggin past December 31st is correct. This is looking like we won't be getting the channel on December 31st since their is no guide date. I could be wrong but I hope we get it. I want to be able to watch Saved by the Bell again. Does anyone have a definite answer that Dish Network will be carrying the channel.

Its possible that when the channel is ready, it will be seamlessly transitioned on the same channel as GaS. They can change the guide data at anytime, the guide would show GaS programming as long as it says GaS, even though it may change to The N.

Very well said by both of you. I guess what is tolerable is all in the eyes of the beholder.

I know I could get my locals through NPS with the Family Pack, but I sure wish I could get my RSN (or get the Multi-Sport package) along with it. If I could, I'd be sold (especially with the way the prices are rising here lately). Someone told me that the family pack on DirecTV included the RSN for the area (of course, it's $10 higher).

Update: I called into Dish network. I was told that they will be able to keep both The N and Noggin if they continued the 12 hour slots. He either lied to me or was ignorant of the fact that both are going 24 hours. So at this point, we will not see either station in its new form.

Its time for the annual programming dispute (just a guess)

The guide data for Noggin is Noggin 24/7 but at 6pm Noggin went off and The N came on and aired all night.

DirecTV had Noggin 24/7 yesterday and also The N 24/7.

That is what peeves me off. We had GAS first and that was suppose to be The-N but no it is still showing those stupid game shows. Dish Network is too cheap to take it off and separate the channels like they suppose too.

Here is a write up on the whole N/Noggin & Nick Gas stuff per wikipedia...

Problems with the switch

Due to technical difficulties during the switchover to The N, Nick GAS was put back on the air for Dish Network subscribers until the problem can be resolved. When the switch was supposed to happen, subscribers to Dish Network received nothing but a black screen for a few hours, The N currently taking over Noggin at the same time every night; Nick GAS has since then been put back on-air. This was possible since the channel and its programs will be moving to the TurboNick broadband channel in the near future and because Nick GAS's consistent programming schedule was automated. DirecTV also suffered from the glitch until 7:25 AM Eastern/6:25 AM Central. Most digital cable viewers saw no problems with the transfer from Nick GAS to The N. Time Warner Cable of Manhattan is currently not carrying The N on their digital cable lineup. They have removed channel 137 from their system, this was the channel that they used to carry Nick GAS. The transition from Nick GAS to The N went smoothly on this channel, but it has since been removed altogether. According to many Dish Network technicians, they have said that the N isn't expected to switch over unto Nick GAS's channel until at no earlier than January 31, 2008. This has been confirmed by The N's Online Message Board.

I guess MTV Networks expected all MSOs, including Dish, to make the switch at their end. If MTV would have started showing The N programming on the same C-band transponder that had previously been showing Nick GAS there would have been absolutely no issue with the switchover.

This is a little bothering as The N gets watched in my household and we have the Top200 pack. I don't want to pay the extra money to upgrade to the next package to get that 1 channel that gets watched a couple times a week. I think Dish might really mess up on this one.

I would not trust Wikipedia. They said that Dish Network had problems putting The-N on Channel 177. I was at 5:55 AM and had 177 on. At 6:00 AM they just went right on to their next game show on the crappy GAS Channel. There was no black screen or anything. The channel just continued like nothing has happened and it is still the same.

What I don't understand is if Nick GAS is off why does Dish Network still have programming on it. Also the Wikipedia article does not mention anything about January 31st.

Edit: According to this post The N: Message Boards: The N on TV: General Discussion: People with dish network!!! t=15 on the N boards that crappy Nick GAS is staying and the N will be time shared. I don't know what Dish's problem is.

According to the N web site - the new location for the N will be at 169 (it's current location). They had an application where you could plug in your zipcode and provider and get the station number for the N after the 1/1/09. Since at least dec 25th, the N application was showing 169 for Dish. Nick Gas has been said to be on Nick broadband for the foreseeable future and therefore theoretically available to Dish and other providers. And, I could be wrong, but I do not know of any announcement from Dish that they intended to add a fulltime feed of the N. (I could be wrong.)

The explanation has been that Dish is not able to technically uplink a feed that several other providers have been able to successfully uplink. Doesn't anyone find that strange?

This is just speculation, but has anyone given thought that there may be a contract issue preventing the N from being on Dish fulltime. Whether it has to do with the DishFamily line up or Dish's attempt to renegotiate the contract because of the substitution or even an attempt by MTV to get on Dish the channel on other systems whose name should never be written least the discussion immediately degenerate. Note MTV tr3s seems also to have disappeared from Dish.

And of course it has to be Dish Network where the biggest screwup had to happen. Probably contract issue (remember Viacom issue of the past?) and laziness from Dish Network to get it switched over. They probably figure that there is not a whole lot of demand anyways for a change and that not many people would know about it.
