Amazon has announced that they will now support Blu-ray as the high definition digital format of choice for consumers. This change in policy will result in Amazon more prominently promoting the Blu-ray format - including both players and movies - on its website. Amazon.com has become a favorite source of Blu-ray titles for fans, because of their lower pricing and excellent customer service.

Peter Faricy, vice president of movies and music at Amazon.com commented, "The high-definition landscape is rapidly changing, and consumers are looking for guidance on how to make the best high-definition buying decisions. Our customers have clearly voiced their support for the Blu-ray format. Blu-ray titles have increased from just over half of our high-definition sales to over three-quarters of our high-definition sales since early January. In order to best serve our customers, Amazon is recommending Blu-ray as the preferred digital format and will continue to carry the ‘Earth's Largest Selection' of Blu-ray products."

Great news!

If "preferred digital format" means they're going to promote Blu-Ray over SD-DVD, then it's great news. If not, it's just another Mr. Obvious moment...

they did not call it the preferred digital format. Read it again.

Go read the post again.
Promoting blu-ray on amazon.com = better sales for us and we will catch up with DVD soon..
We will have lower prices, more bogo's and better deals.
Its not just amazon goes blu-ray exclusive moment.

It is the preferred high definition digital foramt not the preffesed digital format. I suppose it amtters but they are not pusing it over DVD.

Well its good that amazon.com is not pushing DVD.
Instead they are pushing Blu-ray.
Which is good.

Time to dump DVD.

I can't watch SD anymore..it hurts and its painful.
Once you watch HD, you can never go back.

They are not doing anything different with DVDs. They just designated BD as the preferred digital Hi Def format. Since it is the only one at this point that does not mean much.

You're not reading, just posting. They aren't changing anything. Just threw their name out there for free press to ride the coattails of all the BD news circulating.

They are changing web pages to Feature Blu-ray, even the DVD page. But yes they still selling HD-DVD machines and discs, for now.

And they still sell lots more DVD's.

Hey, don't get me wrong - I'm not trying to knock you for posting this... but there have been a lot of posts like this lately... "Universal is going Blu" etc. that aren't exactly news.

I'm staring at it right now and it says "Amazon is recommending Blu-ray as the preferred digital format."

Sorry, guys - I wasn't trying to stir anything up, I'm just not sure how much to really make of this.

Well when I look at it it says "Amazon has announced that they will now support Blu-ray as the high definition digital format of choice for consumers."

BluRay.com and the Op dropped the words "high definition" in their titles but they are in the announcement.

BTW the OP put the ffull announcement in his post. He was not hiding anything.

In the first sentence, you're right. In the second paragraph, which I quoted, it says "preferred digital format" - no mention of HD.

They should have been more clear so that schmucks like me wouldn't take this stuff out of context.... :D

If you read the whole paragraph it is clear that tehy are refering to HD.

Geez, give it a rest, will ya?

This whole line of discussion is taking away from my original point, which is that unless they're promoting Blu-Ray over DVD (and you've made it perfectly clear that they're not), this isn't much of a story.

Ok, things are getting heated up here, lets all cool down and enjoy this moment ok?
It doesn't matter if its news or obvious, still something to talk about.

Getting back on topic, I wonder how long it will take to get some crazy deals from amazon.com for Blu-ray.
I am sure this week belongs to HD-DVD, but we shall see after the sale expires.

I wonder if HD DVD will out sell Blu Ray discs this week. I have a strange feeling Blu will also have a Sale to match software prices!?

We have some movies in our catalogs marked down 57% off but they are old...
