Wings Sign Zetterberg to 12 year deal

Wow, very intresting I have been seeing long term deals in the NHL recently now. But wow 12 years!!

Wings sign Henrik Zetterberg to record 12-year deal | Freep.com | Detroit Free Press

Now if the wings can manage to work the cap and sign Franzen, this will help to keep the good times coming!!

Now that Z is signed Holland will look to get Franzen and Hossa into the fold as well, just like he said he would in the beginning of the season.

I heard Z's contract was for 10 yrs, but it really doesn't matter the length as it will be adjusted as needed as time goes by, like all long term contracts.

Notice, the length of the contract keeps Z's salary around 7M a year which is where the top Wings are making, they continue to get players to take less to play there ..... Z on the open market would comand probably 10M a year.

Actually Z has a 12 year contract with the last two years at $1M and that makes his yearly salary about $6M

The numbers are posted at Freep.com, Jimbo. The first 9 yrs. range from $7M to $7.75M. The last three yrs. are $3M+ and $1M for the last 2 yrs.

Now the bad news: Zetty out tonight with a bad back. Probably hurt himself lifting the money.

Amazing how players are giving up goldmines in order to play here. Warms my heart. Nice to know that winning and playing the game are more important than the money to some players. Hossa and Franzen are next on the list, followed by Hudler and Samuelson. I doubt that the Wings will be able to sign all these guys. Somebody here is going to opt for the money, and/or the Wings will run out of money to sign them.

Yes last year when Lindstrom signed he signed for $250K LESS per year then he was then making.
The Wings sure must be a great organization to work for.
I was watching NHL Live the other day and they said that all contracts in the NHL, including Z's, are guaranteed so even if Z did not play another game the Wings would have to still pay him.

I'm thrilled to see this contract so long, yet resonable money so they can staff a great team around Z.

Ever notice how many people take below market value to sign with the Wings?

They say Detroit is the Yankees of hockey, I would counter that the Yankees never pay ANYONE under market value.

This is simply a sign that this team is the place players WANT to be, even if it means taking less in a salary cap situation.

Well you start at the top with Mr. Illitch and then move to the GM Ken Holland .... 2 very professional and classy guys to work for ...

Good deal for the Wings and good deal for Zetterberg. Of course, we all have to remember that players like Lindstrom and Zetterberg aren't exactly playing for all the free Little Ceasar's Pizza they can eat...most of us would kill to make the $250K Lindstrom leaves on the table each year.

Do they ask for Swedish meatballs on their Pizza! Pizza!

Yes, that would be Little Ceasar's Swedish-born player version of their Meatsa-Meatsa called the Meatsaball-Meatsaball. ;)

What I find interesting is that Detroit went from a team loaded with Russian players to a team loaded with Swedish players.

What I find more interesting is , most thought the run was over when Yzerman and Hull and Shanny left, retired, but the Wings brought in younger talent and look where they are now !

The most interesting thing is watching the NHL start creeping back to what caused the lockout. It has only accelerated with the weakening economy.

Its the scouting department, they have been able to find the great players in the late rounds, at one time the Russian players fit there system...I am thinking now its the swedish stlye. Many of the russian players were under Scotty Bowman
