Why LOGO got put into the HD Platium package

I've been too busy to check it out yet, but I agree, I'm about a straight as you could ever be and I'll check it out when I get a chance. I heard lately there has been some decent stuff on there.

while the stuff is definitly gay themed it is not exactly a gay porn channel. I checked out the guide and saw two movies I had heard of but never had a chance to see. Neithe was i would calla gay film and certainly not even soft core porn.

I doubt I will watch it often but if i see another movie I would want to watch I will watch it.

And I don't agree with their (Direct and Comcast) choice to put it in the packages. It is an alternative channel designed for the gay and lesbian audience. Keep the channel ... but make it an add on to any package for a fee. I applaud Dish for not putting this channel in the top packages. :clap:clap:clap

And amazingly there is more explicit stuff shown on Spike, on MTV, on the afternoon soaps every day than on LOGO...
Christian channels could be call "alternative" since being a christian is most definitely a "choice" and an "alternative lifestyle" so I guess you are all for those channels being made to be add ons as well for a fee?

The Christian channels as add ons is fine with me. In fact I wish we had all ala carte programming including the sports I dearly love. But it looks like that probably will not happen.

Some of you and your responses, I guess I just don't understand. Are you saying because South Park had a sh*t Fest that what I quoted should be acceptable? Personally, I think South Park is the stupidest peace of television crap I have ever seen!!!

I don't see any difference in the show and word you stated and the show and the word that I quoted. Except for the fact that one was on George Carlin's list of seven filthy words and one wasn't. Plus both are cartoons and bunghole and sh*t reside in the same area of the body...
If the word bunghole was on the local ABC station during prime time or during Saturday morning cartoons, then no I don't think it is acceptable, but on a cable channel, be it Comedy Central, MTV, WE, Spike, HGTV, or LOGO then yeah, I don't see a problem with it.
You got kids in the house and don't want them watching the channel, then lock it out. You don't want them watching South Park, then lock out Comedy Central. The great thing about Dish is they give you the option to control the channels you want your family (and you) to watch.

[HGTV] is an alternative channel designed for the [DIY Home Improvement] audience. Keep the channel ... but make it an add on to any package for a fee

[FOOD Network] is an alternative channel designed for the [Foodies] audience. Keep the channel ... but make it an add on to any package for a fee

[FOX NEWS] is an alternative channel designed for the [Republican] audience. Keep the channel ... but make it an add on to any package for a fee

[BET] is an alternative channel designed for the [African American] audience. Keep the channel ... but make it an add on to any package for a fee

As you can see, this begins to be a rather silly statement when repeated with arbitrary stations.

Agreed and it is locked out.

Finally someone gets it. Only they aren't even adding HD "capable" channels...just taking SD channels and upconverting them. There is no BET-J HD, and no one had ever even rumored a Logo HD until a week ago.

My take...profit margins on the Classic Gold package were getting slim. Meanwhile, the Platinum profit margins were HUGE, but everybody's been dropping it because there was nothing in it. Viacom were probably pushing them to add Logo and BET-J. DISH put them in the HD package, despite the fact that they aren't in HD, hoping they could save their Classic package profit margins and drive up Platinum subscribers. I'm really surprised we didn't get any other imaginary HD channels, like CMT Pure Country HD or MTV-U HD. (Actually, I'd really like to get MTV-U, upconverted or not.)

Thank you. I was trying to say that earlier. MTV Networks has a digital suite channels that some providers offer:

Like
MTVU, MTV Jams. CMT Pure Country, MTV Hits and more. I liked these channels when they were available on C-Band 4DTV receiver before I made the switch to Dish.

I am just glad to see new channels and choices.

When you put it that way, the problem seems to be more with your set of beliefs that the channel itself.

It's a gay interest channel. I imagine the term 'gay' makes perfect sense in the show titles. If you find the term gay offensive because of your beliefs, then, as you state, that's your belief. You're entitled to it.

But don't act surprised when others find that attitude 'sad'. They are also entitled to that belief.

I have no problem with my beliefs or others for that matter. The point that seems to be going over your head is this channel will be locked from alot of peoples guides due to some of the wording. not necessarily the programming contained within. Does the news have to be called Gay news. Does news on BET get called "The Black News"??

Also, if the term Gay or any other offends me and I'm not saying it necessarily does who the hell are you to decide that it is sad?

Thank you for noticing.

I didn't want to get caught up in the alternate conversation in this thread but wanted to directly answer the OP question posed.

I do think you are correct that they are trying to bolster the Platinum Tier since they really haven't had programming to justify a separate cost due to them getting rid of ZOOM which was an all HD service. I think if INHD or whatever the name had changed to, had continued on, we'd see this channel added to the platinum tier.

Since there doesn't seem to be any new HD only channels coming out, seems DISH would rather take the shortcut I suggested.

Don't think there's any deep theories behind them putting LOGO or for that matter BET-J on that tier, outside of pure profit.

Do we know (general public) what the signal distributors have to pay toe content providers? For instance, do we know what VIACOM charges for each station to each provider?

Regarding the 'fake' HD...isn't HD technically allowable at 480p? Maybe we'd gripe just as much but I find Platinum perhaps a bit more useful it it had more of these 'niche/low production' stations even if they were all at 480p.

Logo, Fashin and Maverick do feel like "hail-mary let's toss these on there and see if they stick" type logic. I suppose between the 3 of them they were trying to target at least one of the channels to a majority of subscribers.

FWIW there was a program on Comedy Central called "Chocolate News" that was supposed to be an "African-American Daily Show" - but it eventually got canceled.
And, to stay on topic, I agree that E* mainly added these channels to this package to attempt to shore up profits and drive up ARPU in a down economy. Each one of them only has niche appeal.

"I agree that E* mainly added these channels to this package to attempt to shore up profits"

Yea, while conspiracy theories are fun, we all know the only factor involved is money. ;)

It would be interesting to sneak a peak at the rate of platinum cancellations before and after they added these 3 stations.

E* and the channel owners added these channels to the package. E* cannot just put a channel where the want it. it has to be put in the agreed uipon negotiated spot. just like when you go to a hotel, the hotel just doesnt put you in a room. you are in the room that you negotieated to pay the hotel for. takes two to tango.

Lifestyle has nothing to do with choice - it's simply the way a person lives. Why people or groups live the way they do is immaterial. Some people do choose their lifestyle and some have it thrust upon them - others aren't even aware that they have a lifestyle.

To the OP, I think LOGO is in the Platinum package because it appeals to a smaller demographic than some other channels do. I know I won't be watching it but I doesn't bother me to know that others are.

There are much worse topics on the FX shows and they offer both an SD as well as the HD premium package. If they want to charge a premium to receive the channel in HD, that's OK, but every other channel offers both HD and SD versions and LOGO should not be an exception. Those who already carry the Classic Gold Pack, should have all of the channels in SD since this is offered that way. It is just another case of DishNetwork discriminating against the gay community.

There is nothing on LOGO more inappropriate than SPIKE, FX, BRAVO or others that contain adult content. Anyone who has actually viewed the channel would know it.

I think it should have been a simple add-on to any package. It is a niche channel that only a select group really cares about and let them add it for 3-5.00 per month. Would hate to see it in a regular package as there are some topics not appropriate for some people.

This post has been answered over and over. LOGO's demographics are, for the most part, filling a niche. E* has to justify cost per subscriber. I don't think the cost/benefit allows it to be in the lower tiers, just as WFN, MavTV, and the rest in that package. I don't think its that much of a discrimination deal as it is a cost/benefit deal.

Who's getting a deal upgrading to a 722K?

Should i take this deal?
