DISH Network June 3rd FAQ's

Interesting... I read it as the combined line item. Since dish didn't drop the $10 fee last time for either me or my dad without us calling, I'm not sure that they'll drop it this time round either. I won't know first hand since neither of us is currently paying the double charge.

Browsing the other thread, looks like I was right:

he said he called dish and they wanted a 2yr commitment or $99:

I can not believe how confusing this is. My account shows that I would need to pay the $99 to get HD for life but in reading Dish TV Blog:

I should be grandfathered in as I have always had the Gold HD along with the Platinum HD!
At this time I will wait to see my next bill ..................:confused:

Changes like this always have a learning curve. I'd just watch your next bill and if you haven't been grandfathered in, give Dish Network a call and discuss it with them. Just quote them the lines above from the official blog and I'd imagine you;ll be all right.

Pretty good deal I'd say, just have to get through the confusing part.

Here's something confusing...if you go to Dish's website and navigate to "HD Packages," you will see that 3 of the 16 Platinum-level channels are still listed in AT120 (HD Theater, HDnet, and Palladia). So, which is it? Are those 3 channels a part of Platinum, or would I still have them if I dropped Platinum, since they are listed as being a part of the AT120 HD channels?

Those three have been moved to Platinum if you are on the Free HD for Life plan.

This HD for life seems to be nothing more than a gimmic as you can "sign-up" for it if you agree to Dish's conditions. However, you'll only have the HD for life until you stop making monthly payments or cancel service.

I have the AEP plus Platinum and I'll also have the same HD until I stop making the monthly payments or cancel service. What's the difference? What does this HD for life promo give me that I don't already have?

LOCALS SITUATION WITH NEW PRICING

For anyone else not currently paying for locals through DISH, you may be interested in this information. You are no longer able to drop locals from your package. What that means is that if you currently subscribe to DISH and aren't paying for locals (you've always had the option to drop locals from your package) you won't be able to do that if you change your package.

This was confirmed through an online chat. I currently have America's Top 120 for $34.99/month and am receiving locals OTA into my DISH HD DVR. I was paying $10.00/month for HD + Platinum.

My bill has switched to the following:
America's Top 120 - $34.99
AT120 HD - $0.00
Platinum HD - $10.00

So I'm paying $44.99/month for America's Top 120 + HD + Platinum.

However, if I decide to drop Platinum I also have to change my package to AT120, AT200 or AT250 WITH locals (so $39.99, $54.99 or $64.99 per month).

Therefore, if I were to drop Platinum from my line-up and add it at a later time my price would go to $49.99/month instead of the $44.99/month I'm paying now (without locals through DISH). I don't watch many of the Platinum HD channels, but for the time being I'm going to keep what I have since a change would only result in netting me $5.00/month. I like that I don't have to subscribe to locals through DISH (even if that means no guide information for my OTA channels).

Hope that helps others curious about this situation.

I was going to upgrade my silver package to gold and drop the platinum channels but if what you said is true I won't. I paid $30 for their device to decode my locals with the receiver and use an antenna. I don't want to be forced to pay for locals so I'll just keep what I have for now until they change their minds.

I still say they would gain more subscribers and overall customer satisfaction if they didn't try to nickel and dime people and just offered the option to not have locals right on the site, and allowed people to downgrade via the website more then once every 12 months. But hey, all content providers... cable, directv, xm/sirius, phone providers, all do the pressure tactics to try to make people spend more and guilt trip them into not downgrading services. Annoying, which is why I say... the company that doesn't make me feel guilty for downgrading is the one that will get my business for the long run.

But hey, still a better value then the competition and I've gained a new love for television with HD and 5.1!

I don't think you understand the purpose of this promotion. This is to get the attention of people subscribing to other providers. Dish's goal is to get as many new customers as possible with this promotion and they just happen to be offering it to existing customers also. It may not help out every existing customer but it is not meant to work that way. It is meant to get new customers and it is a great offer.

The nice thing for existing customers getting HD and Platinum for $10 is that they have the option to drop the Platinum now and save $10. I know plenty of people who could care less about the Platinum channels.

OK, it's an advertising scheme designed to attract new customers. Nothing wrong with that and apparently it must be somewhat effective as it got Direct TV's attention. Basically, Dish isn't offering anything more than what they were offering before the HD for life promo so considering this a great offer seems a bit of a stretch.

You'd think it was if you were a current Directv customer, since they are SOL for free HD.

I don't see how you think they are not offering nothing new? You were never able to get any HD channels for no extra cost. This is new and a lot of people want to take advantage of it. I guess I just don't understand why there is so much complaining.

Well, that sux! Out of the sixteen Platinum channels, I really only like Palladia, but I think I might have to drop the Platinum package to save $10/month. Good-bye awesome concerts and HD videos!

Right. Some seem to have blinders on over the fact that they can now have more HD channels for the same money as before. I don't get it. Well, no I do, it's just complaining for complainings sake.

There have been some interesting concerts on Epix as well - and they are uncut with no commercial ads. For $2.50 a week, I feel Platinum is quite a good deal. I can easily waste $2.50 on much less valuable items.

The Sunday concerts on HDNet are awesome as well - though there are quite a few repeats.

my parents are trying to get HD. They have been on Dish for years without a contract without HD. They called to try to get an HD upgraded and was offered either $95 for them to come out to put in a new dish and box, or $15 if he signs up for the protection/insurance plan. (both with 24mo commitment)

I seem to remember that in the past, they would give come out for free because Dish wanted you on your commitment.

Does this sound about right? If he paid the $15 and then canceled the insurance, do you think he'd get charged a fee later.
