Is the protection plan at Direct a good idea? If you don't have it what does it cost to get equipment replaced? Do you get tech support?

honestly, to each their own. I have it and I can justify the monthly cost, but some people can't. I've used it only once in the year and half I've had it but I have peace of mind by having it too.

Same here, I have it, have had it for 5+ years now, I do all my own work if needed, but can't replace recvrs, they will take care of that as well as anything else I may need to be done that I don't have time to deal with.

what I don't understand is if I am leasing and do not own the receiver, why must I pay to protect it? it is their hardware, if it is a technical issue, they should have to replace it. that is why I will never pay for the plan. when I buy a cell phone, I get a warranty and after that period I am responsible. But I own the phone. It has been a year with D*. I assume any warranty I have/had is up, and I must pay to replace their hardware? HAAAAAAA good luck with that one. They can kiss my ass if that happens :p

I've had DirecTV for about 15.5 years and I've never had the Protection Plan. The one time I had a receiver starting to go bad DirecTV replaced for just the cost of shipping and a two year extension of my contract.

2 year extension to replace there bad receiver does not sound right.

I think to replace with a upgrade receiver is the way to get a contract extension. Replace the bad receiver with the same model is not an extension in your contract.

I know it's not if you have the PP, but am unsure about it if you don't.

Replacing like for like should not trigger an extension with or without.

Upgrading is where I'm not sure, actually, I think if you upgrade you get a new commitment regardless, now that I think a bit more.

Replacement of defective receivers doesn't affect the contract. Upgrades will reset the contract.

I've been with DirecTV since the mid-90's
I have the protection plan, so far it has replaced/upgraded four of my six IRD's, fixed bad wiring twice, free remotes, etc.

I was able to get a new H23 when my RCA DTC210 started acting up. I used to have all RCA equipment, now I have 2 left.

IF you own your receivers, and have older wiring I recommend the protection plan.

No, not quite. If you have a defective sd receiver and you get a replacement sd receiver of any model there is no new commitment. If you get an hd receiver or an sd dvr, then you will have a new commitment.

I've never had the protection plan and I never will.

From what I've heard it's $20 to replace a defective receiver, and $50 for a house call to re-align and/or replace the dish, multiswitch, etc... Big deal......

Not worth paying for the protection plan.

I think its any upgrade , unless its a D* model.

I replaced a Samsung Sir 300 that I owned for a D10 now leased and that gave me a 12 month commitment.

Ok, I think I need Stone's help here again.

Stone, I looked at your Sticky post Contract Extension Chart and I wanted to clear this up about the contract extension question as it pertains to replacing a defective box.

Here's a couple of scenarios, both without the Prot Plan:

1) Someone has a defective HR22 box. From reading your chart, replacing the box does not reset the contract time. This policy is the same regardless of the Prot Plan being present, right?

2) The other question that I have is, under this scenario (defective box is an HR22), what happens if the defective box is replaced with an HR24? Since that technically constitutes an upgrade, even when the original box is defective, will that reset the contract? Also, if a customer has a defective box, will it always be replaced with the same model box? In this case, will it always be replaced with another HR22? Is a defective box ever replaced with a lower-tier model box?

Would scenario #2 be different with a Prot Plan?

IF u have a receiver that is bad and is replaced with same standard receiver is bad and replaced with a standard receiver that does not renew ur contract

hd / dvr bad replaced with a new hd / dvr no new contract does not matter what model

only time there is new contract is if u upgrade a receiver from like a standard receiver to like a hd / dvr than yes that would renew ur contract with dtv

hope that helps
