Hey guys, I am probably going to bite the bullet and sub to DirectV within next few weeks, with loss of masters and ability to move my bud if I buy W5 4dtv package after 1/1/11.

I have a couple of questions for new install of Direct,

1. I have an FTA H-H dish mounted on a 1 1/4"(?) pipe, will they more than likely be able to mount the dish on this pole and use existing quad shield RG6?

2. I would like to get FoxSports Detroit, live in South Georgia though. I see I can sub to FoxSports several channels for about $15 extrra per month, would this include abilty to watch games or do you have to have Extra Innings/NBA package . etc? I don't know what good it would be to have the FS channels if you can't watch any games.

The mount for an sd dish is 1 5/8", and 2" for the hd dish, so it doesn't look like they can use your existing pole.
The sports pack will get you all of the local rsns around the country, but you will be blacked out from the pro games. For that you need the Extra Innings, Center Ice, etc packages. IIRC you don't need the sports pack if you are subbing to one of the pro packages, but you won't get the out of market rsn except for the particular pro game you are watching.

This also applies to pre and post games. If you subscribe to a pro sports package, but do NOT sub to Sportspack, then you will ONLY receive the game itself. It does not include the pre or post game (and in some markets like Dallas the intermission reports either).

Good points, I forgot about them.

Does your FTA dish have the correct line of sight for DirecTV?

If that 1 1/4" pole is really that small, you might be able to get a 2" OD pole that would slip over it.

I have never hacked DirecTV, but I've been around long enough to know who Dave and Charlie (aka Charles) are. I have also never subbed to Dave or Charlie so go figure. I would sub to the masters forever if they would have let me, unfortunately that will not be possible after 01-04-11, so they leave no choice. C-band began dying with advent of USSB and Primestar, and 15 years later here we are. I will be finally seeing ESPN, TWC, FoxNews, CSS, TBS, etc again, so it's not too bad I guess.

I wonder how many here know what tvro is or what a LNA was, or even who was Arthur C Clarke? I bet not as many as who know who Charlie and Dave are, huh?

And, if its against the rules here to use those two names, let me know. Maybe its like saying bomb in the airport??

What about using a collar on your existing pipe? Depending on the installer Direct may want to run there own 3ghz coax. Are you going to go SD or HD? If your just doing 101 SD and have an 18" dish you could toss it up for when the installer comes out. I had one up and we hooked my original install to that. The installer gave me a Slimline dish and a SL3 LNBF plus a 18" dish & LNBF and a roll of 3 ghz coax. He said I could do a better job then him when he saw my dish farm. That way I was able to set up whatever I wanted. You can always have him do the install too then redo it to your spec's when he leaves. In fact my installer wanted to see my bud in action more then he cared about installing D*. He even asked me WHY? am I getting Direct when I have all this :)

Good Luck with Direct, they have been alright for the most part. I've been installed since Jun 21st. Only beef I have is the rain fade I get when big storms roll through. Even with a 90cm dish it still dies some. I was talking today to Mike Kohl about Direct and rain fade. He suggested upping my Direct dish to a 6 foot! Pretty big Pizza pan  may be a plan for next year :)

It should, I only use it for FTA, its plumb and no problem with any sats from 61 to 148 W.

I just guessed at 1 1/4" inside diameter, I'll have to check it, it is schedule 40 galvanized, I'll need it to be 2" ID?? If so I might get a piece of 2" rigid conduit from work.

I know all about C band and feel the same way you do about the masters. There is nothing like C band I don't care what anyone says. The pluses with Direct is the channels and the box is faster then the 4DTV with the guide. Your also not waiting for the dish to move but thats it in my book.

The negatives are picture quality and rain fade... oh and of course that contract :(

TVRO, I'll be going with HD. Probably within next couple of weeks. I am subbed with the 4DTV until last week in December, so I'll definitely be doing some comparisons, why I don't know. Not that it will matter now, how can I promote something that the manufacturer/tm owner has tried so hard to kill? I guess just for personal satisfaction knowing masters were what it was all about. Life goes on.

If they want to run their own coax, so be it, at this point I'm so fed up I don't care I guess. The wife is VERY happy (she cant wait to get soapnet...)

chill.....I was making a note. Back when the hackers were big that is what they called Directv, Dish and Bell (Dave, Charlie and Bev). Its like when people post and say something like this
"I am trying to aim my D**h dish at the campsite" to which I usually respond "no need to put ** in the words...well if they're swear words thats different" ;)

if the outside diameter is 2" you'll be fine as the HD dish uses that size

I have the 4DTV on right now on C3 and comparing the master to Direct. You know what win's and it's not the small dish. Something most probably don't know about Soapnet, they will be going away next year sometime. Disney is going to change that channel to a new Disney. I think it's called Disney JR or something like that. I guess Soapnet don't make enough money.

Don't get me wrong I enjoy Direct, it works well for the most part and it's nice to have the channels 24/7 vs hoping a feed is ITC on C band. But when a master is ITC on C that Direct has. Direct get turned off :)
