Recording back to back shows on same tuner??

How come when I am recording back to back shows on the same channel the DVR records one on Tuner 1 and one on Tuner 2. I thought previously it was smart enough to use the same tuner since it is the same channel. Is there a setting that got changed at some point that I can change back to make it not do this stupid thing?

That is one of the flaws of the DVR's. It "thinks" the overlap is a new channel so it records to the other tuner. The other thing it does is lets say you are doing a setup like this
tuner 1 records say rasslin from 8-10
tuner 2 records 2 1/2 men and the show after it (8-8:30 and 8:30-9)

tuner 2 will stop at the exact time the program says (say 8:30) then start the new show.

I know my 211k (which has one sat tuner and one OTA) does that too. Back to back shows it hard cuts at the exact time. My R22's on Directv will record the overlap with no issues

Other than having the timers stop at the exact time with no overlap there is no way around this

Dish DVR's used to work with an overlap, if you left them at the default START- 1 min early, END - 3 min late. They no longer work correctly, even at those settings.

Well, my 722K still does. So I have been changing options to 5 minutes late because I'd rather have them record on the other tuner (since I am in Single mode). IE, Burn Notice/Suits.

hhmm... wonder if there are different things happening on different receivers. I know that I get the end of show A on the beginning of show B so that would be same tuner. that would be continuous recording, right? when I look in the guide both shows, show the same number in the little circle.

I regularly record back-to-back shows and my 622 does it on the same tuner. Every week, for instance, I get two Pawn Stars recorded back to back while I'm watching or recording something else on the other tuner. Because those shows (and some others) are broadcast together (one "package" of two shows) the timing isn't always perfect. That is, the first recorded show may "end" a little early, but the actual end will be on the beginning of the next recording.

I think I'm at defaults... one minute early, three minutes late.

For this exact reason, I have learned to be careful and "pad" things occasionally. Nothing more disgusting than the last 15 seconds of something to be missing where it switched over to the next timer on the same channel. Especially if you already watched the 2nd one and deleted it without realizing the first 10 seconds were the other show.

That was the whole point I tried to make by starting this thread...

Unfortunately, I don't think Dish was listening. I wasn't really looking for work-arounds, I wanted Dish to fix it.

Cheers

I have my defaults to start 0 minutes early and 1 late on my 722. The 0 early usually gives me about 5 seconds of the previous show. When I am not recording the another show immediately it does go 1 min late, but if I am recording a show at the next time slot, it does stop at 0 late and switches to the new show.

Another option is to chgange to 0/0 then you will be able to record on the same tuner all the time.

On my Vip612's I have the timing of shows to start on time, and end one minute later as the default. If the shows are back to back on the same channel, it does not go to a second tuner. It simply overlaps recording between the two shows on tuner 2. This happens all the time with shows such as "Pawn Stars" or "Dog The Bounty Hunter" so I know I am correct. Even if tuner 1 is not recording, it still all records both on tuner 2. If I am watching live TV (Tuner 1) I have no indication tuner 2 is recording when the first timer ends, other than the red light on the receiver. There is a slight exception. Every once in awhile it thinks it is going to record to tuner 1, I get the countdown, but then it aborts and records as I indicated, on tuner 2.

I am on a 722 VIP and mine does not. If I am recording something on Fox fro 8-9 and then something on Fox from 9-10, with the default start early/end late times, it does one show on tuner 2 and the next show on tuner 1. I could swear it used to do both on Tuner 2.

Based on reading other posts in here, it appears to be some setting I guess. People with default end/start times are having no problems recording btb on same tuner. Maybe I will put start/end times to 0 minutes and try that.

what settings? It still doesnt record properly if shows are back to back....especially on a 211k. It still cuts off at the exact end time (not the padding time)

Check your settings. Dish can't fix what happens on your end.

LOL.

That's the problem when trying to explain it. Many people just don't properly understand the issue to begin with. Then they start talking about "tuner 1" and "tuner 2" or "check your settings", which just further illustrates their lack of understanding concerning this issue.

For whatever reason, it's really hard to get folks to comprehend that it's not about multiple tuners, or getting timers to work. I can make my 211k do anything that anyone else can. It's not about that. It's about allowing a single tuner to simultaneously record the same channel within two separate recordings (giving "same channel" back to back recordings a safety padding), which is something that the 211k won't do for anyone.

DirecTV has it right. It doesn't appear to be a priority with Dish. So we live with the limitation & life goes on. And most people still won't have a clue what we're talking about.

Cheers

I agree

exactly. The 211 has only one sat tuner so there is no "other" tuner to go to. But since its the same channel why doesnt it allow overlap? In the 211k's case its a hard cut. Show goes until 8:30? Hard stop at 8:30 so it can record the 8:30-9:00 show you have set to record. It does it on the OTA portion too.

yep. Last night on the R22 I had for 2 minutes (9:29-9:31) the DVR recording 4 shows at once. Both series had back to back new shows so it records the overlap just fine

Does the overlapping stream go into both recordings on disk?

yes it goes onto both recordings

so the 1st show of Pawn Stars shows 8:59-9:31...I see the 1st minute of the new show usually when the theme music begins
2nd show starts at 9:29-10:01...I see the last minute of the previous show...the one I just watched

If I did this on the 211k it would hard stop the recording at 9:30 then start recording again
