Service Restored to 129 Satellite!

I am sure there is a way to force a guide download...my locals havent populated yet. Anyone know how ? I am sure its been discussed before but long day at work and this is page 78 :)

Yep... MENU - 6 - 1 - 1 - Check Switch - Test ... When it's done it'll download the guide.

Or... GUIDE - 999 - RIGHT ARROW KEY ... May or may not work...

Or... Unplug power for 30 seconds - Replug.

JIM ............ a homemade antenna should do just fine though for OTA , huh?? That or a VERY inexpensive store bought one covering UHF/VHF? The home made works 100% for the majors in my neck of the woods. I don't get the five "Praise the lordie" or "Buy Me Now" channels .... but then, I don't want 'em.
Yours should work fairly well since there is only 1 VHF station in your area and it is on ch 7. High VHF, I just use a good UHF antenna too and have VHF in the area. The following TX areas where I have lived & worked are as follows Amarillo has 3 VHF, Dallas has 3 VHF, Midland/Odessa has 1 VHF (but is pretty weak & in opposite direction from the UHF) and Lubbock has 1 VHF. All but the Midland/Odessa area has worked fine using only a UHF antenna.

My guess is that the cause will never be publicly released by SES or Dish.

Actually, last night was just a dry run so we are accustomed to longer and longer outages. That way, when the bird fails completely, in a month or so, we can just shrug and say, "Oh, well. Here we go again . . . " only the next time it will fail permanently and we will all wait as they scramble to remove all the locals from spot beams and put the network stuff onto 110 and 119.

This is not funny.

For more than a year, ever since the outbreak of hostilities involving HD retransmission fees, ominous rumors have been privately circulating among high-level satellite leaders that the Disney Company has been at work on what was darkly hinted to be the ultimate weapon: an HD satellite doomsday device. Intelligence sources traced the site of the top-secret project to the perpetually much maligned Euro Disney just outside of Paris. What they were building no one could say, but clearly should be considered as a possible reason for the malfunction and as a warning shot across Dish's bow…

BTW got this last night after I went to bed. :)

DISH Network Statement on Temporary Service Interruption

Majority of DISH Network Customers Unaffected

Englewood, Colo., Sept. 14, 2011 -- DISH Network restored all affected television channels for its customers Wednesday morning after experiencing a temporary interruption of service on some of its channels overnight.

The interruption mainly affected high definition channels to a portion of DISH Network customers. Standard definition channels were largely unaffected resulting in a majority of DISH Network customers not being affected at all.

The interruption began at approximately 5 p.m. ET Tuesday and involved the Ciel2 satellite, which is operated by SES at 129 degrees West Longitude through a Canadian subcontractor and leased to DISH Network. SES has attributed the anomaly to human error in its ground operation of the spacecraft. According to SES, there is no issue with the health of the satellite.

We’ve provided updates to our customers through our customer service centers, our website, our retailers, and social media.

Let me guess, they are soon going to move it to either Roswell, New Mexico or to Area 51 in Nevada!

"...not being affected at all." ............ yea right! Not at all .... across the country folks smiled as their "...not affected at all." HD picture went black and they had no idea what to do because they are not all tech-nuts. "...not affected at all.", my patootie.

"We’ve provided updates to our customers through our customer service centers, our website, our retailers, and social media."

Oh really? Funny few folks aside from those in the biz or really in to watching TV knew WHAT the heck was happening. It sure didn't make the news!

Really in the big scope of things it really didn't effect many at all.

Consider that many of the customers are on the Eastern Arc, they didn't notice anything wrong as for them there was nothing wrong.

On the Western Arc there are still more subscribers who dont have HD service then those that have HD service. This outage didn't effect them.

For those who are on the Western Arc there were many who didn't notice because they were watching something that was not on 129 or they were not watching TV at all.

While I think DISH could have done a better job in keeping customers informed... (I would like to see the system changed so that if the complete signal loss comes up it checks for signals on other satellites, and if there is an issue when it gets signal from another satellite the complete signal loss screen can be updated with a status report.) The complete signal loss screen is bogus as you still have signal just not from the current satellite your watching.

But DISH was on top of things as they updated their website (which was hard to get to because of the amount of traffic hitting it.) they were posting status updates to Twitter and Facebook. We also had 3 DISH Network staff members here updating us as they could as well and were also answering peoples questions and PM's.

If I were grading the DISH Response on this issue I would give them a B-

It could have been better but part of the issue was the satellite is not under their control, so like us they were waiting for status reports from SES Americom.

From the FCC website (Thanks to the link posted by Melson61 above) the key point...

During the evening of Tuesday, September 13, 2011, an operational problem at the

Canadian satellite Ciel-2 ground control station, located in Canada, caused the satellite to lose

earth pointing. This, in turn, resulted in the disruption of service to some DISH Network DBS

subscribers. Service has since been restored. But DISH and EchoStar have been informed by

SES that the process of restoring the satellite with the correct orbital attitude parameters caused

the satellite to drift west. SES is expected to cause the satellite’s drift to stop at 129.2° W.L. on

September 15, 2011. SES will then cause the satellite to drift back to the nominal stationkeeping

box at 128.85° W.L. +/- 0.05°, a drift that it expects to complete by Monday, September

19, 2011. DISH and EchoStar understand that at no time did the satellite veer outside the

128.8°-129.2° W.L. orbital cluster allotted to Canada under the International Telecommunication

Union’s Region 2 Broadcasting-Satellite Service Plan.

Those damn Canadians! They always gotta ruin everything!:D
