Untethered iOS5 jailbreak for all non-A5 devices

Why?

JB is a very simple process and no data is lost. It is much easier than rooting and can easily be reversed anytime. One just needs to remember that if they rejailbreak that they save their tweaks and reinstalled the backup.

Best of all, it opens up your phone to do much more than Apple allows. I use several Cydia Tweaks and APPs daily; some more than any of my iTunes APPs.

Nope, it makes things complex, it has to deal with constant problems from software updates closing down exploits. I lived in the rooted Android world for 18 months, been there, done that.

My phone does everything I could ever want it to do, and it does it elegantly.

Not questioning your pleasure with the phone running as it is. If you like it as is, then that is great.

But when it comes to rooting vs JB, they are a different beast. So bad experience with rooting may not be the case for JBing. I have yet to have a problem updates closing down exploits as I do not run that many exploits to begin with.

I guess everyone has their own experiences with this kind of thing. I've had zero issues with my rooted Samsung galaxy s2.
It could also be the amount of different android phones out there that makes things so different from one user to another. I must've been lucky twice because my evo was pretty solid as well. One thing I've done differently this time around is that I've stayed with it stock but rooted.no problems. Getting back to iOS, only issue I'm having with my jailbroken iPad is the directv app.besides that my iPad is better for me jailbroken.i guess that's the whole point here What makes you happy. I'm happier with rooted and jailbroken devices.but that's me. Others are not. Nothing wrong with that .........

Are you running 1.3.7 or an older DirecTV APP? I'm am still on 1.3.6 and am still able to watch Direct through the APP on my JB iPad.

1.3.7 :(
Wish I could go back to 1.3.6

That is why I always first update the APPs on the device and try them out. I do not update on the computer. If the APP doesn't work I delete it off the device and reinstall the older version from the computer. If it does work, then I update the APP on the computer as well.

Found that out the hard way dealing with the Vulkano APP with my HAVA player. It had nothing to do with JB though. It was an issue with updated Versions of the Vulkano APP supporting legacy devices.

The only APP that I use that has ever had an issue with JB is the DirecTV app.

once they figure out the last update to the directv app, i will do this.

There are two levels of elevated access in Android and they are both sometimes referred to as rooting.

First is rooting, which gives you privileged access to the running OS on the phone. Many phones support very simple rooting procedures including "one click rooting" where you download an app, click a button to root. Most of these have backout capability too.

The next level is unlocking the boot loader. This gives you unrestricted access to all of the phone including custom kernels, custom ROMs, custom recovery tools etc. Depending on the manufacturer this can be fairly easy (htc has streamlined their process) , complex or even impossible.

It's important to seperate the two.

For me, the ability to install whatever i want is important and I find the effort to be rewarding as a learning experience.

That is one of the things that still really irks me about Apple. Just for disclosure, I do have an iPad 2 and do like it but I don't see my next tablet purchase being another iPad. I'm more of an Android guy, but to me it wasn't worth buying an inferior tablet system while Google figured out how to make a good tablet OS. Personally I think they should not have even bothered with Honeycomb and should have just released ICS on the tablets and phones.

I don't like Apple's attitude of "Do it OUR way and if you don't like it, TS" with their devices. I prefer Google's attitude of "You can do it OUR way, but you can do it YOUR way as well. Just don't come crying to us if it doesn't work out." I love the fact that with my Android I can install custom ROMS and kernels and other things to make it the way I want. Doesn't mean that Android is inherently BETTER than iOS, but at least I have the OPTION to mold my device the closest to my liking, as opposed to relying on Apple/Google/3rd Parties to give me full packages that hopefully will be more good than bad.

The minute a jailbreak is available for 5.0.1 both of my iPad2's, currently stuck at 4.3.3, get updated. The window for updating might be small if Apple quickly releases a fix for it.

Yes, and I think TinyUmbrella may be one of the tools to use, even if you don't want to upgrade.
It'll let you install 5.0.1 later (even though Apple stops signing it), if that seems desirable.

Now, why might that be? 5.0.1 vs your current 4.x?
Well for one, 5.0.1 can be JB & untethered on the 3GS, the 4, and soon the 4S (speculation on the 4S).
It seems there are -still- a lot of power consumption issues with iOS 5 family.
At least that's both what I read, and what I have here in my hand. :(
