The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon

Jay had a huge advantage with the monologue. He is a stand up comic and that is what he does naturally. Like when he did all his own stuff during the writer strikes. Hopefully Fallon improves with time, and perhaps with a new writer or two.

Jimmy drew the show's highest "live" ratings in four years last week. with the exception of Jay's final week. Jimmy is getting an average of 5.5 million "live" viewers a night compared to 4 million average by Jay and less than 3 million by Dave.

Jimmy's viewership numbers are not sliding. After the expected drop from his debut show to his second show, they have been holing at around 5.5 million viewers a night.

NBC claims that live+DVR within 3 days last week has eclipsed ALL Jay Leno and Conan O'Brien viewership, ever!
http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/tv/showtracker/la-et-st-jimmy-fallon-is-new-tonight-host-rewriting-ratings-for-late-night-20140227,0,4155367.story"On Thursday, NBC released Nielsen data that showed Fallon's "Tonight" on NBC gathered 10.4 million total viewers during its first week, including people who watched on their DVRs up to three days after the original broadcast. That makes it the biggest overall audience for the program since the last week that Johnny Carson hosted, in May 1992.

That's right -- Fallon's mark just eclipsed the entire Jay Leno/Conan O'Brien era in one fell swoop."

This has been a hot discussion at work. And many of the folks that never watched Leno are now watching and loving Fallon.

Most of them are like me dvr'ing it and watching it the next day. That's what we are doing and my wife enjoys the show now as well.

That's the only way I can do it since I'm turning into such an old man :D . Wife watches it with me too and loves the games played on the show.

If it's merely Fallon's late-show moved into the Tonight Show time-slot, then he's probably not going to be successful in the long run. They tried that with Conan O'nnoying and the ratings tanked. Conan's show was essentially the same late-night schtick that didn't play to the Tonight Show audience. Fallon is far more likable but I'm going to opt for 20-minutes of additional sleep each night if Fallon doesn't learn how to deliver a monologue.

The monologue needs some better writing but as long as the rest of the show continues to be strong it shouldn't be a problem.Still, I'm sure it's going to get better.

Timers are close to being deleted. I'll watch the show once every week or two, but I can't do it every night. Perhaps we should call it The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Felon because it's a crime what he's doing? Well, he's certainly better than Coco.

Alright. We get it. You don't like Jimmy Fallon. You don't care for his humor. You are mad at NBC for removing Leno and wish he was back. Your anger at NBC is being transferred to Fallon. You may honestly not like Fallon's brand of humor, but I think a lot of it has to do with resentment that he would take the job offered him in replacing your favorite TV personality. I can respect that. At first I was apprehensive about the change. But after giving Fallon a fair viewing, I found him more entertaining overall than Leno. This is not to say that Leno wasn't good. He was/still is. He is like an old, soft, worn-in blanket. He made you feel comfortable and warm and good all over. He was replaced by something different. And to those like me who did not watch Late Night but once in a blue moon, something very new.

Now the reality. Fallon is getting BETTER ratings than Leno or Coco. The Tonight Show has not seen numbers like this since the DVR became a house-hold item; and if you count DVR viewers within 3 days, since the days of Johnny Carson. There has been no ratings slide since day two of the show probably meaning that curiosity viewers are pretty much accounted for and the real audience has pretty much stabilized at a HIGHER number than what it was. For reference, at this point in Coco's Tonight Show stint his ratings had fallen 45% from his debut show and were on a 3% per day steady downward slide. That's not happening with Jimmy. Jay had great ratings. So far, Jimmy has even better ratings. The reality is Jay is not going to be called back to the Tonight Show for a third time. The reality is that NBC made a great move and has substantially increased its lead in the late-night ratings race to the point that it has as many viewers as all of its competition combined.

So what do you do from this point forward? Do you keep on making "just wait til he fails" posts or try to enjoy what is available to you?|
Do you continue with more Mr. Bitterson "I hate this guy" or "the other guy was better" posts, or do you just realize that NBC made a sound business decision?
Do you continue to post an opinion that has been heard over and over becoming the Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon's thread impersonation of Bluegras on the HD forum, or back off and realize that, like Fearnet HD on Dish, Leno will not be back on the Tonight show?
Do you hang around a thread devoted to a program you obviously dislike and is not going away, or do you just change the channel and watch a program you would like better and make positive contributions to a thread devoted to that program?

The choice is all yours.

I have not watched since premier until tonight when the TV was "left on". I was laughing without looking. He seems to be comfortable and in total control. AND, he has Randy Newman tonight, so he has class!

And so you know my perspective, I had not watched the Tonight since Johnny. Not a Leno fan.

EDIT

The SOUND mix on "I Love LA" was atrocious.

We get it...you love an inferior talent and subpar show. Enjoy! Timers (at all three houses) deleted...

What a shame. I expected better from a "Supporting Founder" and a "Proud Satelliteguys Staff Member" than to resort to Thread Crapping.

You've stated your negative opinion repeatedly. Enough is enough...

Move on. Everyone has a preference and everyone's preference is valid. People dropped it because they prefer Leno over Jimmy. People started watching because they prefer Jimmy over Jay. People stopped watching Jay because they preferred Johnny. I'm in that group. If you like it watch it. If you don't, then don't.

I got to admit, I didn't watch Leno much... I didn't start really watching him until his last few weeks of his show.

Jay seemed different then when I watched him before, instead of being bashful, shy and nervous he was no confident, calm and sincere. His interviews were good he was asking questions I wouldn't have expected him to ask. And his monologues were great, which to me was always the best part of the show. You could tell he liked coming out and doing his gig.

I am now sad that I didn't watch more. I liked THIS Jay Leno.

Now with Jimmy Fallon I got to be honest and say I can't remember the last time I laughed so hard at late night tv. His weakest point is his monologues, but his skits and interaction with most guests is top notch. Although you can tell who his friends are and who are just guests scheduled by NBC For his friends his interviews are a lot of fun, but for other guests its just a blah interview.

If I had to say who is closer to Carson I would say that award would go to Fallon. He is pushing the envelope with his skits just like Carson did. Fallon is multi talented so you never know what hes going to do next, and that includes singing, dancing, playing instruments or being used as a human bowling ball.

I do find Jimmy's co host Steve annoying as hell. Jimmy would be better with a GOOD sidekick. Carson had his in Ed McMahon and Jimmy needs one to help him take some of the weight off his shoulders. You can tell by Jimmy's face that hes trying as hard as he can and I don't think hes enjoying what hes doing yet. A side kick would help greatly.

No Fallon is not for everyone and yes NBC did it again by removing a great host from a slot when that host was already #1 for his timeslot. They should not have removed him as long as he was performing and that is what he was doing. I have a feeling the move wasn't made to keep Fallon happy as he was happy at 12:30. I have a feeling it was to keep Lorne Michaels happy. As with this move the Tonight Show is now one of his properties.

I watched the show from Monday night, yesterday. That Lip Flip was very weird but you can't help laugh at the stupidity of it. I really like how the guests feel comfortable with Fallon and pretty much seem to be themselves. Jimmy also seems to be genuine when chatting with his guests. The show gives me an overall good feeling.....

Well I am back to my previous viewing habits of the Tonight Show... Only if I happen to be flipping by I will stop, or if someone I am interested in will I set a DVR event.

I agree with all of your post ... Jimmy would be much better with a better sidekick or NO Side Kick.
He would do better to have Questlove be his sidekick.

My Dad, who liked Leno and isn't sure about Jimmy yet, keeps asking why when doing the monologue, Jimmy keeps looking to the side and talking to this guy instead of delivering it to the audience, who he should be speaking too.

As for Mr. Allen (sidekick), I don't see him going anywhere as on the opening night when everyone was introduced, it was mentioned that Jimmy and Allen go way back and worked together on SNL and are good friends. So because of that, I see Allen sticking around, sadly.
