5G Is DISH’s “Manhattan Project”

DISH has been slowly recreating their company from one that is known almost exclusively as a satellite TV service. From launching Sling TV to offering in-home cellphone repair and antenna installations, DISH has been looking to diversify.

Now DISH is putting a lot of work into 5G Internet as a new focus. In an interview with Bloomberg, DISH’s Chairman Charlie Ergen says 5G will be their “Manhattan Project.”

Just remember from history the Manhattan project was about building the first atomic bomb before our adversaries could . I think DISH will be playing catch up 5g at the rate they are going ,instead of first to market.

I think the difference is that Dish's 5G will be for internet only whereas the rest of the companies will be telephone driven.

This project should have been launched in 2010 and launched in 2014.

He needs to keep the dream going long enough so someone buys the company before the licenses expire.

When Dish does eventually find a buyer, it’s going to be way worse than what AT&T did to Directv.

I meant 5g isnt so much for cell phones.its replacing landlines .everything is internet based...the old phone infrastructure is being removed....instead of running fiber..they are going to use 5g stationary cellular for landline

Except there are huge areas where we're not even seeing a decent saturation with 4G let alone 5G. All this cell densification seems to be going on in cities, where they don't even NEED it because people could still be using wires! (Do you really need to be watching 4K TV on a 4" screen? No, no you do not. If you have that much money to throw away, please send it to me, I promise I'll put it to good use...) In rural areas, any plan to put up small cells is going to have to deal with the not-insignificant problem of having backhaul for them -- and if you're going to run wires (or glass), why not just, again, cable everybody up?

(On the subject of long-haul, I haven't heard anything lately about (was it AT&T's?) plan to use powerlines as Zenneck-wave carriers. On the other hand, I've recently found out about the folks setting up a Wardenclyffe-style wireless Zenneck transmitter down in Texas. Interesting times...)

Its about retiring the land line network...dense populations have more dispatches and cost more money in maintenance

I don't specifically know about abandoning the poles but I posted years ago when At&t left Connecticut their stated goal was to leave the landline business everywhere. So I would believe you are probably correct if they are poles they will not use for other purposes.
In Ct they had to find a buyer to stop maintaining service and they did. They have stated their intentions to end of that service in other States since and many have voted to simply allow it.

My opinion is At&t views satellite service as it does landline service and bought Directv only for the programming assets, contracts etc.

At best dish will get a couple cities lit up. But most likely their proprietary system will find little support from manufacturers, apple and Samsung won’t support it in anyway, leaving dish the only equipment supplier. AT&T and Verizon will just play the same game they played when lte became a thing. Roll it out into a handful of major cities, realize the standard is too expensive, reclassify what 5g really is, and the rest of the country sees a small bump in data speeds.
