Since there are numerous cat lovers here I thought maybe some can share their thoughts on cutting the mats from my kitty's back. He's a DSH born in a barn and never been much on personal maintenance. Last couple years he has been getting hair mats on his back. Last year I had the vet take care of it but it was expensive to have him anesthetized for a $10 hair cut. He needs attention again but I'd rather not put the cat through anesthesia again if I don't have to. He was wiped out last year, poor kitty :(

He totally trusts me and I think I could do this. But do I need some special sheers? Are the mats difficult to cut? Anyone shaved their cat?

Funny you should bring this up. My cat developed hyperthyroidism (she's under treatment for that) and her hind quarters were covered with matted fur. I tried to cut the mats out myself, with very limited success. So I took her to the vet/groomer this morning and they found her very stressed out over the buzzing of their sheers. But they managed to come her out somehow instead, and now she looks good as new. Even that was expensive.

Well I was really just trying to help my poor kitty without starting something that belongs in a different forum. :(

My 12 yr old kitty weighs 7 lbs. She got a bath 1 time and it took 2 of us, she truly thought we we're trying to kill her. Since then she gets these Burt's bees wipes, it's good for everyone involved.
