You certainly don't need a hard-wired ethernet connection for VOD. I have it working fine using wireless-G. Yes, it takes a while for the selected show to download, but unlike the Tivo downloads from amazon.com, the download does not need to complete before you can start watching it.

Just a thought, but does your TV accept all input formats? Some people have found that sometimes the HR20 sets itself to 480i after a software download or power surge. Try using the RES key on the front panel to cycle through all available formats.
