Edit 4/1/2016 I have let the H3 settle in as advised. The EHD is still not recognized.

EHD issue update. Received cables and connected one of them between the H3 and the external drive. Nothing happened. Called Dish Tech Support, trouble shooted all three USB ports, nothing. Dish sent a reset signal to my hopper. Now the external hard drive activity indicator blinking like crazy...

Yes the EHD does have its own power supply as required by Dish network. I ordered 3 cables off Ebay to try. Thanks for your input.

2nd opinion received that the data cable has gone bad with a short. Checking at Best Buy for replacement. Thanks for feedback.

I too had to format my EHD for it to work with the Hopper. The way you format the drive varies depending on whether you are using a PC or Mac. I used the PC myself. Can you tell us what kind of computer you are using?

Call Dish and tell tech support what's happening. I had a issue with my HWS, and had a new one installed the same day. It might have been easy for me as I carried equipment insurance on my account too. Give them a call any way. Gary
