1080p is not enough: high-end smartphones in 2014 may feature 6-inch 1600 x 2560-pixel screens

The Retina display is 326 pixels per inch. Seems quite excellent.
That is what we should concentrate on, not total pixel count.
Current discussions conveniently ignore "ppi", which is the yardstick sharpness is measured by.

So while full HD resolution (1920 x 1080) would be overkill on a 3.5" or 4" phone, it might be inadequate on a 10" tablet.

All of it depends on the intended / expected viewing distance.

Would you hold a 10" tablet the same distance as a 5" phone? Probably not. What about a 15" laptop display or a 24" computer monitor?

The biggest factor is ... Viewing distance.
