Starting January 1, 2011 devices cannot be made that output High Def through component cables. Will this carry over to output signals for service providers, whose existing (which are mostly leased) STBs (cable/phone/satellite)?:D

It ain't that bad...

No new models can output hidef over component.

Existing models with such capability can be sold until the end of 2013...

After December 31, 2010, manufacturers will not introduce new hardware with
component video outputs supplying more than an SD resolution (480 or 576i).

If the manufacturer has existing models in its line-up, it will be able to continue selling that model until the end of 2013.

The only problem with existing BD players is that discs will be able to use the image constraint tolken to force component down to 480p, allowing only HDMI for HD on existing players.

And will tv service providers follow on their leased equipment in 2011 or 2013?:D

The resolution will be cut in half, from 1920x1080 to 960x540.

Although IIRC, when ICT was introduced (but delayed) as part of AACS, the talk was about downconverting only vertical resolution...

I think all old models will run until 2013.

methinks fron 1920X1080 (2 million pieces of info) to 720x480 (or 842x480?) 404 thousand pixels is a little larger loss of detail (about 1/4th the info).:D

You can rest assured in one thing: if there is a chance to f**k up this transition, it will happen.
And if there is no such chance - it will happen nonetheless...:)

Just look at HDCP for "inspiration"...
