You may have to build something on the outside of the tube.

L brackets and radiator hose clamps on the tubes would be my first thought. The puzzler would be the extended stop, but maybe a rod attached and bent to trip a normally closed switch.

These are all very interesting ideas. The only problem I can think about would be protecting all these external switches from the weather.
