Mac OS "Really Vulnerable," Claims Kaspersky Lab; May 14, 2012, Forbes (snip of the full)

Apple has turned to security firm Kaspersky Lab in an attempt to harden the security of its Mac OS X platform, after a series of high-profile attacks against the operating system over the past few months.

Speaking to Computing , Kaspersky’s chief technology officer Nikolai Grebennikov confirmed that Apple has asked for the company’s assistance in analyzing the Mac OS X platform for vulnerabilities.

“Mac OS is really vulnerable,” he claimed, “and Apple recently invited us to improve its security. We’ve begun an analysis of its vulnerabilities, and the malware targeting it,” said Grebennikov in the interview.

Grebennikov went on to say that he feels that Apple doesn’t take the security of its operating system seriously enough.

“Our first investigations show Apple doesn’t pay enough attention to security,” He said. “For example, Oracle closed a vulnerability in Java, which was a target for a major botnet several months ago.”

He also believes that it is only a matter of time before Apple has to contend with malware targeting the iOS platform running on the iPhone and iPad.

These comments come shortly after Kaspersky founder and CEO Eugene Kaspersky claimed that Apple was 10 years behind Microsoft when it came to security, and the company will have to change the ways it approaches updates following the recent malware attacks, where a Java vulnerability allowed over 600,000 Macs to be netted into a botnet by malware called Flashback.

Oh gee. Ungood news. And I'd say now that the myth is broken, lots of crackers will turn their attention to Apple.
