Well, I just read the BBC article about CES. Mostly truly dumb ideas like a heated razor.

But filed under “WHY?” is:
Alexa-activated toilet flush

What do you mean? Rosey was great!

My one and only experience with CES (1972?) was also great. I personally got to meet Ray Dolby and... I'm drawing a blank about the other famous person I shook hands with. Henry Kloss?
On a whim (mid '70s), I one day called Massachusetts 411 and asked for Henry Kloss. Got the number, called, and I'll be darned if it wasn't his house. The wife answered and I said, "Can I speak to Henry?" She said, "He's in the basement...I'll get him". He came on (I really wasn't ready) and about all I could say was, "I bought your Larger Advent speakers and wanted to tell you they're great!".

I went to the Summer CES (back when they had it) in Chicago in the mid '80s. I got an autograph from Traci Lords.

Where it's Warm
Today's news

"Amazon and Google are expected to have a lot to show at CES. Partners of both companies, from TV to appliance makers, will unveil gadgets with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant built-in. Google has also said it tripled the size of its presence at CES from last year.
Apple might also be playing defense, though. Its HomePod isn't as popular as the Google Home or Amazon Echo. November data from research firm Canalys has Amazon and Google with 31.9 percent and 29.8 percent share of the smart speaker market, respectively, while Apple isn't even included as a big player"

Deeper Dive—What AT&T, Comcast, Dish and others have planned for CES 2019 | FierceVideo

"Dish Network at one time made a habit of dropping splashy product and service announcements during CES, but in recent years the company has scaled back its news rollouts during the show. The company is still present, and this year Sling TV President Warren Schlichting will engage in an “Audience Battle Royale” along with Discovery’s Nancy Daniels, NAGRA’s Andre Kudelski, Group Nine Media’s Ben Lerer and MTV’s Chris McCarthy.

During Dish’s most recent earnings call, Schlichting said that Sling TV’s focus right now is on improving customer experience, and the service has been making small announcements with respect to that goal. It’s possible Dish and Sling TV might continue that trend during CES but there’s always a chance the company has something big up its sleeve."

So Samsung & LG are producing 8K TVs. When will we see broadcast or cable channels in 4K? Yes Dish has 4K PPV movie's but that's about all. There is channel 540 but it's usually off the air.
totally agreeing with you on that point watch CES on CNET on youtube or on plutotv.Dish should be there today to announce at least something about 4k or maybe something about applications on the hopper 3 DVR.

Yes, 8k is just around the corner and yet over 60% of the TV Channels available in the USA, still broadcast in SD.
