Cheap HD DVD players coming from China

Sony wouldn't shoot themselves in the foot. If HD-DVD became the prevailing format, they would release their movies in HD-DVD along with all the other studios. We know the reverse is true as well.

If it were stricly economical, then the best solution is to support both formats from the start, to maximize exposure/sales of titles.

Sony has a history of shooting themselves in the foot, and of not being quick to apply first-aid. Consider the Memory Stick. Sony remains one of very few companies that produce any devices that use Memory Stick media. Yet another format-war, with Sony riding a horse that's at the rear of the pack.... and this one has lasted a decade.

And memory sticks that are slow, and aren't even compatible with each other.

But, -sigh-, I still think the Blu-ray specs will win the day for them, this round. But if BD doesn't take a strong lead before next Xmas, we can probably safely figure HD-DVD will be the winner and stay around, even if Sony keeps the BD as a hanger on for the next decade.

I just look forward to it being OVER.

In six weeks (since the launch of the PS3) BluRay movie sales caught and passed the HD-DVD sales (that have been going on since June). Right now this is a neck-n-neck race but BD sales are outstriping HD-DVD sales right now. Add to that most of the January Audio/Video magazines coming out have a review of the PS3 as a BD player and are very positive in their reviews and I think you will see BD pulling away this first quarter.

And lets not even talk about March and April when there will be some great movies coming out only on BD from Disney and others.

I'd like to see sales figures on numbers of retail sales of HD-DVD dedicated players vs Blu-ray dedicated players (NOT including the PS3- list those separately, and the HD-DVD add on to the xbox)- both as month end figures, starting with December, and cumulative retail sales (how many are out there). That is important, should be seen along with titles sales. I gather when we see the first quarter sales figures, it will be important- revealing, one way or the other.

But there's the question of porn- will they go with one format, or cover both bases? Is it true, as has been posted in another thread here, that Sony is preventing porn on BD? If they are, they're stupid. Well, ok, we know they're stupid- but such a policy staggers belief. It would guarantee HD-DVD's survival. Any way to find out if they in fact can (or want to) block the porn producers from using Blu-ray?

Never underestimate Sony's ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
