I hope this is not misconstrued as an advertisement, but I just had to share my experience.

I have a Samsung HLN617W DLP TV. If you're not familiar with this DLP technology, they involve a user-replaceable lamp (I'm not talking about the new LED's). My particular model is expected to last 6000-8000 hours. I have an extended warranty that covers lamps for the duration of the warranty.

Last December, after 6832 hours, my stock lamp died. I called up my extended service company and had the replacement shipped to me. Five days later, the Samsung lamp arrived (the failure happened over a weekend). This is our only TV, so we obviously had 5 days without TV. Sounds tragic, I know, so this is when I decided I should have a spare lamp on hand. I could then replace the lamp immediately and wait for the warranty replacement to arrive in the mail; then swap 'em out when it arrives. (The reason for the swap-out is because the warranty company requires you RMA the burnt-out bulb).

So shopping for "the spare", I found prices around $250-$280+ shipping. This out of pocket cost seemed to defeat the purpose of the extended warranty. So I passed.

I recently found on eBay ( I won't disclose the seller as to avoid any impropriety ), replacement lamps. The lamps are manufactured in the US (Los Angeles, specifically) by Lighting Technologies International (LTI). They have the same specs and warranty of the OEM lamps but cost much less. They don't sell directly (only to distributors), so I feel comfortable mentioning their name.

I received a replacement lamp (model: BP96-00224J) for $177 shipped. I was most impressed and just wanted to share this info with any of you considering purchasing an OEM lamp.

Thanks for the tip! I wont say how many hours I have on my original bulb because I dont want to jinx myself...but I should probably keep a spare on hand now.

BTW...I though the 61" took a different bulb than the 43 and 50"? This auction is showing that it fits all of them.

According to Samsung, the stock model #BP96-00224E is no longer available and is replaced with BP96-00224J which is for use in the following sets: HLM4365W, HLM437W, HLM507W, HLM507WX, HLM617W, HLN4365W, HLN4365W1X, HLN4365WX, HLN437W, HLN437W1X, HLN467W, HLN467W1X, HLN467WX, HLN5065W, HLN5065W1X, HLN5065WX, HLN507W, HLN507W1X, HLN507WX, HLN567W, HLN567WX, HLN617W, HLN617W1X, HLN617WX, HLP4674W, HLP5674W, HLR4677W, HLR5677W

I seem to remember reading somewhere that this model-merger was being done to streamline production/sales, widening the compatability between the varying sets.

An addendum to this post: Granted it had been a while since I've searched for the OEM lamp, but after doing a recent search @ Samsung Parts, the OEM lamp can be had for just $179 (plus shipping--ground shipping being around $12). My eBay purchase was $177, total (including shipping). Therefore the savings is only $14. I just hadn't realized how much the prices on the older models have plummetted. However, I still noticed that many online merchants are still selling for around $250 before shipping.

The 61" used to have a higher wattage blub than the 43 and 50. So, did the 43 and 50 get a bump in brightness or did the 61" take a hit?

It was a long time ago when I read about this, but I seem to recall that early releases of the Samsung HLN's (and maybe HLM's) had ballast/lamp issues. It was something about Osram and Toshiba lamps and bad ballasts. Anyways, some releases had to have ballast upgrades--the visible difference was a connector that was one piece (indicated you had an old ballast) vs. a "two-pin" connector (indicated you had the newer one) which used a 120w Philips lamp. I believe the 120w lamp went into the smaller models as well, thereby brightening them. I may have this all wrong, though. I'm just pulling this out of memory.

The fact is, the current lamp model# BP96-00224J is a 120w lamp and is identical to the discontinued BP96-00224E & BP96-00224C.

The simple answer is that I believe the 43" and 50" got a bump.
